Marketing CopyAlex Lithgow (1870-1929) was born in Glasgow, Scotland, grew up in Invercargill, New Zealand, and was described by some as the "March King of the Antipodes." In 1909, after he had begun compsing and had moved to Tasmania, his brother, then lead of the Invercargill Band, wrote requesting a new march for an approaching brass band contest. Because of the urgency and immediacy of the contest, Alex responded with a piece that his publisher had just rejected, renaming it "Invercargill" and dedicated it to the citizens of that city as a memento of the years he had spent there as a boy. It was an immediate success and eventually became his most popular work.
