| 783 | 0a91ee5d-9e3b-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | M185491 | Chorale Preludes by Old Masters, Vol. 2 | The present collection of forty five CHORAL PRELUDES OF OLD MASTERS (CHORALVORSPIELE ALTER MEISTER), presented in three volumes, may well serve as an introduction to those of Johann Sebastian Bach, since it demonstrates that the forms which Bach used actually emerged in the course of the seventeenth century. Although Bach's great genius outstrips his predecessors in the use of these forms, the organ music of the seventeenth century is well worth examination in its own right. In comparison with the works of the post-Bach period, which have enjoyed long popularity, it shows up to enormous advantage. This collection will have served its purpose if its stimulates the organist to explore the rich material afforded by that earlier period. Works in volume 2: 14. Erich: Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Chris; 15. Hanff: Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein; 16. Hanff: Auf meinem lieben Gott; 17. Hanff: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott; 18. | 788 | 0AA9138D-1825-415C-8342-42910F61F3D1 | A935790 | Requiem (Messa da Requiem; Totenmesse): Sanctus | Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) wrote his Requiem Mass for four soloists, double choir, and orchestra in 1874 in memory of Italian writer and humanist Alessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi greatly admired. It premiered on May 22, 1874, the first anniversary of Manzoni's death, at the San Marco church in Milan under the baton of the composer. The revised version was first performed the following year at Albert Hall in London. The oldest part of the work is a "Libera me" that Verdi wrote in 1868 as part of a collaborative Requiem project with other Italian composers following the death of Gioachino Rossini. After this project fell through, Verdi repurposed and revised the "Libera me" for the Manzoni Requiem. The "Sanctus" starts with a brassy fanfare to announce him "who comes in the name of the Lord." The music that follows for the double chorus is a complicated eight-part fugue. It needs to be played with this happy-go-lucky feeling. The abundance of slurred eighth note passages makes it suit the style of playing that developing clarinet players need to experience. | Clarinet Quartet |
