6860948CBE8-8FE7-4045-B062-4F6F6812BEA0A742902Tannhauser: Overture and Venusberg Music (final version)TANNHÄUSER, an 1845 opera in three acts by Richard Wagner (1813-1883), combines two German legends: the mythologized medieval German Minnesänger and poet, and the tale of the Wartburg Song Contest. Like many of Wagner's works, the story focuses on the conflict between sacred and profane love, as well as redemption through love. It was first performed on October 19, 1845, in the Königliches Hoftheater Dresden, and this 1845 edition is referred to as the "Dresden version." A heavily revised version was created for a March 13, 1861, performance at the Paris Opéra, though the jeering from a highly critical audience caused Wagner to withdraw this "Paris version" after only three performances. Further revisions to the Paris version were made in 1875 to create the "Vienna version," including a return to German rather than French, and it is this update of the Paris version that is most commonly used today. The overture, frequently performed by concert hall orchestras in its Dresden version, here flows directly into the music of the Venusburg, the sumptuous realm of the goddess who has lured the enraptured poet into her embrace. 687094EF872-42FB-468C-9A14-231C51F2B65C10100201Overture for Winds, Op. 24Written for eleven winds when Mendelssohn was fifteen years old, it has been set for contemporary wind band (the saxophone parts are optional, staying with a desire for historical accuracy to the extent feasible), this is a shining jewel of music. With care towards balance, articulation, and musicality, this is a solid repertoire piece for advanced groups. This edition also preserves the instrumentation of the 1826 autograph should the conductor choose to reduce the number of players to the original eleven winds. Vivaldi even published the concerti with accompanying sonnets that made clear what in each season the music was meant to invoke. "Autumn" is the third concerto of the group. Suddenly the percussion section takes all of the attention with an 18-bar soli, quiet but driving before the winds return with a slower legato section again. The music closes with the whole band taking up what the percussion section introduced earlier, driving to a rousing finish.Concert Band

69909808ADD-0F41-41EF-9D26-745E63A3CF2EA877902Chanson Triste [composer's transcription, C]French composer Henri Duparc (1848-1933) is known largely for the thirteen songs included in this collection, eight for which he wrote orchestral accompaniment. Chanson Triste (Op. 2/4) was originally one of a collection of five mélodies written by Duparc, though three were later destroyed for not meeting the composer's standards. (The other surviving song from that collection was Soupir.) With a poem by Dr. Henri Cazalis (under the pseudonym Jean Lahor), Duparc creates a song full of melancholy, suitable to the text. The song was set with orchestral accompaniment by the composer in 1912. The original version for high voice in E-flat and a version in C for medium voice, (transposed by Pierre de Bréville) are both available from the publisher.
