Set to a libretto by Rida Johnson Young, it successfully ran on Broadway from 1917 to 1918, establishing Romberg as one of the foremost composers of operetta. The saga tells of two lovers, kept apart by class differences, whose descendants are eventually brought together in marriage. Ottilie and Richard, in the poignant duet, promise to love each other from life’s blossoming May to its dreary December, even though their paths may separate for good. He offered to write a 3-to-5-minute work for any instrument, with or without accompaniment, in exchange for an appropriate donation to the NYP. The first such work was the Rondo for oboe (or flute) and piano. The second commission was in reality two, for a set of twin musicians who were about to graduate high school and major in music performance in college. The resulting Five Duets for clarinet and trumpet are performance etudes, short studies which focus on 20th-century musical styles as well as playing techniques. No specific works or composers are ever referenced, and no extended techniques are required. | Clarinet and Trumpet

I have admired Gordon’s playing, writing, and general musical understanding for some time and had wished to write an extended musical work for him. This piece was inspired specifically by his way of playing the piano and his musical insights. This work unfolds over a long duration—with a slow pace. The basic material for the work consists of a series of musical objects: 1) a 12-note set; 2) a sequence of chords in an extended tonality; 3) and a brief quotation from the motet Jubilate Deo by the Renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso. | Solo Piano

A work for four solo voices, chorus, children’s chorus, and orchestra, Berlioz originally intended the work, based on Goethe's dramatic poem, to be an opera, though most of the work's fame has come through concert performances given the difficulty staging it. The premiere at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on December 6, 1846, was met with indifference, perhaps because it exists between being an opera and a cantata, but it now sees frequent performances in concert halls, and it is occasionally staged as an opera. A few wholly instrumental works are included, and among them is Berlioz's version of the Rákóczi March, usually called the Hungarian March (H 109). Berlioz had actually written the march separately for a concert on February 15, 1846, in Pest, Hungary, and the success was so great that he decided to incorporate it into his larger project as the conclusion to Part I, with a few small tweaks. It is this version commonly heard today. The libretto by Ferdinando Fontana is based on a short story of the same name by Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr. Going off to collect his inheritance, Roberto promises his bride-to-be, Anna, that he will return to her. When he fails to return, enchanted by a siren, she dies in his absence. Blaming Roberto for her death, her father invokes the Villi to wreak vengeance on him. The opera premiered at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan on May 31, 1884. In the Act 2 interlude La Tregenda (The Witches’ Sabbath), the legend of the fairies, who induce the breaker of a woman’s heart to dance himself to death, is depicted. Hoffmann's 1816 short story, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," the original 1892 production, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in Saint Petersburg, was not considered a success, although the 20-minute suite extracted by the composer was. Starting in the 1960s, the popularity of the full ballet has grown enormously, with frequent performances every Christmas season among the major ballet companies. Nutracker Miniatures, an arrangement of six dances from the ballet, is here arranged for cello duo by Marian Drake. | Cello Duet
