| 521 | 06E91FFF-761C-4C0B-8BE3-EF4B2C01AE36 | A929791 | Piano Concerto No. 2 | Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) set to work on his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16, in 1912 and completed it the next year. But that version of the concerto is lost; the score was destroyed in a fire following the Russian Revolution. Prokofiev reconstructed the work in 1923, two years after finishing his Piano Concerto No. 3, and declared it to be "so completely rewritten that it might almost be considered [Piano Concerto] No. 4." Indeed its orchestration has features that clearly postdate the 1921 concerto. Performing as soloist, Prokofiev premiered this "No. 2" in Paris on May 8, 1924 with Serge Koussevitzky conducting. It is dedicated to the memory of Maximilian Schmidthof, a friend of Prokofiev's at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory who had killed himself in 1913. Movements: 1. Andantino-Allegretto (10-12 minutes), 2. Scherzo: Vivace (2-3 minutes), 3. Intermezzo: Allegro moderato (6-8 minutes), 4. Finale: Allegro tempestoso (10-11 minutes) Detailed instrumentation: Pno Solo: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(2-3): Str (9.8.7.6.5). | Piano Solo with Piano Accompaniment | |

| 523 | 06f157f1-9e3a-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | A791390 | Away in a Manger for Orchestra and Chorus | The beautiful Christmas carol AWAY IN A MANGER has long been thought to be the work of the German reformer of religion, Martin Luther, though the text is now believed to have originated in America. While a setting of the text to music by William J. Kirkpatrick is also commonly heard, the setting by American hymnist James Ramsey Murray, first published in his 1887 collection Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses as LUTHER'S CRADLE HYMN, remains the most popular. It is from this publication that the attribution to Martin Luther comes, and an additional spurious attribution to a "Carl Mueller" in 1914 created further confusion, with the melody itself sometimes called "Mueller." Murray's authorship is now fairly established. This arrangement by Arthur Harris is for a boys' choir and orchestra, and a version for mixed chorus, harp and string orchestra (A6734) is also available from the publisher. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.0.0.0: Perc(2): Hp.Clst: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Boys' Chorus (SSAA). | 2.2.2.2: 2.0.0.0: Perc(2): Hp.Clst: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Boys' Chorus (SSAA) | |

The composer chose two poems written by his friend Maurice Bouchor as source material, weaving dark Tristan-esque imagery of a windswept sea with flower symbolism expressing the memory of love and unassuaged desire. He completed a revised version in 1893, after which it finally found its first audience on February 21 in Brussels, the composer playing the score from the piano, Désiré Demest as the soloist. On April 8, 1893, the Société Nationale de Musique premiered the full orchestra version with Éléonore Blanc performing the vocal part. Versions for high voice in G (original key) and medium voice in F (transposed) are available from the publisher. Movements: I. La Fleur des eaux; Ia. Interlude; II. La Mort de l'amour. | Medium Voice and Piano

Kowalec of the 33rd Armored Regiment, Charles Booker used the melody in his 1980 arrangement "Our Third Armored Division Song." Booker later composed new material to serve as the opening of the march, placing his 1980 setting in the position of honor as the march's trio, and called it GUNS UP! It showcases lyrical melodies in a setting combining accented rhythms, rich harmonies, strong counter melodies and a short, but inventive fanfare. | Concert Band

The songs span the whole of the twentieth century, and the majority of them are by living composers, with the notable exceptions of Amy Beach, Mary Howe, and Florence Price. All of the songs have been selected on the basis of poetic choice, strength in text-setting, and accessibility in performance. The Five Songs for soprano and piano (1986) was inspired by five poems of the Spanish poet Frederico Garcia Lorca (1898 - 1936). I. El silencio (The silence), II. La mano imposible (The impossible hand), III. La luna negra (The black moon), IV. Las seis cuerdas (The six strings), V. Clamor. The English translation of the lyrics are also included to give the performer flexibility in performance. | Voice, High
