566079CBF47-D1B1-4E36-8EC5-8D593D4EE5EBX504089The Fifth BookTHE FIFTH BOOK of the title refers to what Stephen Hartke considers his fifth book of madrigals, only two of which books are actually for voices, with the others being for string instruments. Hartke writes madrigals for string instruments due to their inherent singing quality, but also due to the fluid structural character of the madrigal as a genre that often responds in quite mercurial ways to the emotional unfolding of its text. These five movements are thus abstract madrigals whose larger outlines, shifts in mood, and various internal reminiscences are intended to convey a private, unspoken drama. Commissioned for the Brentano String Quartet by the Frankfurt Burgerstiftung im Holzhausenschlosschen sponsored by the Ernst Max von Grunelius-Stiftung.String Quartet

57507B5F512-6034-4ECA-8429-CDFC52CF79F9M397091Concerto in A minor, Op. 129Robert Schumann's (1810-1856) Cello Concerto in A Minor was written in only two weeks, between October 10th and October 24th 1850. It premiered on April 23rd, 1860, with Ludwig Ebert as the soloist. It was never performed during Schumann's lifetime, the premeire took place four years after Schumann's death. While all three movements are unified in thematic structure, the concerto is regarded as unconventional for it's time. This version is edited by Janos Starker, in collaboration with Emilio Colon, for cello and piano. Starker Performance Editions.Violoncello and Piano

While what would later be considered the fourth in the series was likely written first, the other three were composed in the same order as their corresponding number. Being chamber works, Martin? found great difficulty in seeing them published. SERENATA No. 2, H. 216 (also SERENÁDA or SERENADE) premiered on April 18, 1939, in Prague. Instrumentation: 2 violins and a viola. Reprint edition.2 Violins and Viola
