Presented as a light, scherzo-like movement, there is quick interplay between many voices, key changes, and fresh rhythmic figures. It is pure delight to play this separately or as part of the magnum opus that is the entire Symphony on Themes of John Philip Sousa.Concert Band

65105EE16DDE-5D3D-4F18-B717-990AE42CD365A311902Aida: Act I, Romanza: Celeste Aida (tenor)AIDA, with music by Giuseppe Verdi and a libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni, is a staple of the operatic repertoire. The story, set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, tells of tragic love challenged by jealousy and loyalty to country and family. Commissioned by Cairo’s Khedivial Opera House, it was premiered there on December 24th, 1871 in a performance conducted by Giovanni Bottesini, although, due to a limited audience, Verdi considered the performance at La Scala in Milan on February 8th, 1872 to be the true premiere. The aria, "Celeste Aida" (Heavenly Aida) is sung by Radamès near the beginning of Act I, where he dreams of victory on the battlefield against the Ethiopians ("Se quel guerrier io fossi!") and also dreams of his secret love of the Ethiopian slave, Aida. Instrumention: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Solo Tenor. Reprint Edition2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Solo Tenor

65155EF203AB-85D8-49CB-8D37-87A1C3036CD5X013001Shadow Play for Flute, Oboe, and Bassoon"Shadow Play" has three movements played without pause: I. Quasi Cadenza, II. Slow Dance, and III. Very Fast. As the title suggests, it is a light-hearted, playful composition which nevertheless presents some unusual challenges for the ensemble, including extended synchonized cadenza-like passages in the opening movement that test the trio's ability to follow its leader (...like a shadow), occasional flirtations with popular music idioms in the later movements that might be unfamiliar to those whose instruments have little or no traditional rolo in that style, and the challenge of sustaining the performance in the face of some unconscionably cheesy "borrowing" from a composition certain to be well-known and respected by the performers- and by many listeners as well.Flute, Oboe, Bassoon
