Fugue (transcription) | Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite for solo piano by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), composed between 1914 and 1917. The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer who had died fighting in World War I. Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted the Fugue and Toccata movements. Pianist Michael Round created this orchestration, which was recorded by Vladimir Ashkenazy (Exton, 2003). The instrumentation matches Ravel's scoring from the original four suites. Instrumentation: 2.1+EH.2.2: 2.1.0.0: Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). Round's orchestration of both the Fugue and Toccata in Ravel's original instrumentation, as well as Ravel's orchestration of the original four movements (Clinton Nieweg edition) are available from the publisher. | 2.1+EH.2.2: 2.1.0.0: Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set)

The opening fanfare-like figure reappears in the transition from the second theme to the traditional "trio", and the first theme is developed largely through canonic imitation between the trumpets/cornets and trombones/baritones. The contrasting second theme is treated in two forms, first as a solo melodic line, and then with a harmonic development that includes a long, flowing counter-melody line in the tenor instruments. The opening fanfare returns for the last time in the coda, and brings the entire work to a stirring conclusion. PRO TEXANA was written on the occasion of the composer's visit to Baylor University in Waco, Texas. | Concert Band

He tried offering the work to two publishers before Breitkopf and Hartel decided to publish it. He stressed the point that it would probably sell because cello concerti were few and far between. Never performed in the composer's lifetime, it received its premiere in Oldenburg on April 23, 1860, with Ludwig Ebert playing the solo part. The unique charm of the concerto lies in its structure and scoring, without movement breaks, and written so that the cello part almost never strays from its middle and upper registers. Boyd's setting is not a simple rehashing of the famous Ravel orchestration, as Boyd remains more faithful to the bold musical language of Mussorgsky's original composition. This exciting work fits the bill for better high school and college bands, yet is substantial enough to meet the needs of professional organizations as well. The work is available in its entirety with all seven sections and the score included at a value-minded price, or each of the individual sections may be ordered individually as a set of parts only and the complete score (10105314) may be purchased separately should only certain sections be of interest. The sections include: Part 1: Promenade; Gnomus-Gnomus. Part 2: Promenade; Il Vecchio Castello.Part 3: Promenade; Tuileries; Bydlo. Part 4: Promenade; Ballet Of The Chicks In Their Shells; Two Jews, One Rich, The Other Poor; Promenade. Part 5: Limoges-The Market Place; Catacombae; Cum Mortuis In Lingua Mortua. A leading example of the bel canto genre, the opera premiered at La Scala in Milan on December 26th, 1831. The story tells of a love triangle between Norma, the High priestess of the druids, her Roman lover, and a younger priestess for whom the Roman has fallen. This excerpt occurs in the first scene of Act I. Norma leads the druids and priestesses in their grove, advising caution in dealing with the invading Romans. She then prays to the moon in her aria "Casta diva" / "Chaste goddess" to bring heaven's peace to the earth. After dismissing all else, she declares that she cannot hurt the Roman Pollione, the father of her two children, wishing that things would return to how they used to be in "Ah! bello a me ritorna" / "Return to me, O beautiful one." This excerpt is in the transposed key of E. A version in the original key of F is also available from the publisher as A2758. No score for this transposed version in the key of E is available, but the score for the version in F (A2758) may be ordered separately if that is desirable. | 6479 | 5E6E57B9-6A64-4AD9-8BBA-977C8699F2BE | A133802 | Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 | Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Symphony in C minor, Op. 68 between 1854 and 1876. The long period of composition resulted from Brahms' self-criticism, with the composer destroying much of his early works, and from the daunting expectation that he would continue the legacy of Beethoven. Following the work's completion, it premiered on November 4, 1876, in Karlsruhe, Felix Otto Dessoff conducting. The work is now a standard part of the orchestral repertoire.
