Delightfully upbeat and lively, this Grainger classic arranged for either string orchestra or a 6-7 string chamber ensemble in 1911 will lighten up any performance and provide a bit of musical history at the same time. Written in the style of a morris dance, it is completely original and was inspired by the motto "always merry and bright," which may be the best way to describe it. It moves along at a brisk pace, surprisingly rhythmic and tuneful, and the light, jaunty style will stand out on any program. Based on E. T. A. Hoffmann’s 1816 short story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” the original 1892 production, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in Saint Petersburg, was not considered a success, although the 20-minute suite extracted by the composer was. Starting in the 1960s, the popularity of the full ballet has grown enormously, with frequent performances every Christmas season among the major ballet companies. Edwin F. Kalmus Publishing produced several decades back the original version of the orchestral Suite No. 2, Op. 71b, from the THE NUTCRACKER. After a few years away, that original suite (formerly A2174) is available again in this current edition. It was the last solo concerto that the composer wrote, and it was the final work that he wrote during his three-year term as Director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. While the encouragement to write the concerto came from cellist Hanuš Wihan, the work was premiered in the end by cellist Leo Stern on March 19, 1896, with Dvo?ák conducting the London Philharmonic. This critical edition based on the composer's manuscript has been created by Otakar Šourek. Instrumentation: 2(2nddPicc).2.2.2: 3.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(1): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Cello. The solos in this book provide a smooth transition from the snare drum to the drum set by emphasizing technique and musical concept. And they relieve motivation problems by providing solos that are intended to be played without accompaniment, are interesting to the player and an audience, and make very good pieces for use in a contest situation. | Drum Set | |
