| 6350 | 5c922aca-9e3c-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | X504112 | A Voice Passes | A VOICE PASSES… provides musical commentary on three haiku by the 19th-century poet Masaoka Shiki and one by the legendary master he most admired, Yosa Buson. Stricken with tuberculosis and addicted to morphine in the later years of his short life, Shiki wrote a large number of haiku that dealt with the pain and suffering caused by his illness. Of these, many were at the same time infused with humor and optimism. The haiku selected by the composer as the programmatic bases of the individual movements are laid out in a “four-seasons” sequence and progress from the despair and resignation of summer to the hopefulness and vibrancy of spring – a not-so-subtle metaphor for the progression of the recent pandemic. In addition to the textual inspiration, each movement is structured around a well-known composition that echoes the spirit and content of the haiku. | String Quartet | |

It is intended to be a friendly piece of music, as Jambo is the Swahili word for “Hello.” It is a call for more kindness in the world as we all journey through this life. The viola part requires two playing techniques: bowed and pizzicato. The marimba part also requires two playing techniques: open sound and dead strokes where the marimba player strikes the mallet into the bars. | Viola, Marimba | |

| 6358 | 5CB5862E-2B23-4739-A4F9-259B9664CD4A | X504092 | String Quartet No. 4: Traveling Symphony | Commissioned by Caramoor Music Festival in New York and premiered July 14, 2017 by the Argus Quartet, this work is in no small part a response to this quartet's sense of adventure and expressive emotional range. Inspired by two end-of-civilization novels the composer was reading prior to composing the work, the quartet unfolds in a single movement, loosely based on plot lines in both novels. One of the novels includes a Traveling Symphony, an assortment of musicians and actors who travel the countryside for decades playing symphonies, jazz and orchestral arrangements of popular music alongside performances of Shakespeare plays, reminiscent of medieval troupes traveling the countryside in plague-ridden times. The work is written so that the quartet embodies the Traveling Symphony, not only playing music but also singing and 'stage whispering' fragments of "King Lear" and other text across the collection of nine scenes. | String Quartet | |
| 6359 | 5CB6D745-14C7-4C54-BD19-28D577B8642B | B346002 | Phantom Regiment for Concert Band | This work was written by Leroy Anderson in 1951 and premiered by him when he recorded it for Decca. Interestingly, in 1956 the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps of Rockford, Illinois changed their original name from the Rockford Rangers after having heard the piece played by a different corps. The music emulates the sound of distant trumpets and soldiers marching, drawing closer to the listener bit by bit. As the music gains strength, the marching and trumpets get louder and after passing the audience, it slowly fades away as they disappear into the distance again. | concert band | |
