| 6267 | 5B4363B3-3384-4587-9204-17715E61F3E5 | A275602 | Ah! Perfido, Op. 65 | Ludwig van Beethoven composed the concert aria Ah! perfido (Ah! Deceiver), Op. 65 for soprano and orchestra in 1796. Beethoven sets verses by Roman court poet Pietro Metastasio (1729-1782; real name Pietro Trapassi) to music immersed in eighteenth century operatic tradition, resulting in a sound a bit reminiscent of Mozart. The text tells the story of a woman betrayed by her lover. In the opening recitative, she expresses rage and asks that the gods punish him. But following her initial outburst, she switches to begging for his mercy and goes so far as to offer to die in his place. Finally, the beautiful aria Per pieta, non dirmi addio (For pity's sake, do not leave me) begins before returning to her earlier anger. The scene and aria is considered difficult technically, but the wide range of emotions expressed by the singer is also demanding. It premiered on November 21, 1796, in Leipzig at the Theater am Ranstädter Tor, with soprano Josepha Duschek as the soloist. | 6271 | 5B50618F-88F8-4E70-BC3B-DBB10487B4BE | A135002 | Hungarian Dances Nos. 5 and 6 (WoO 1) | Originally written for piano four hands in 1879, this set of 21 lively dance tunes, mostly on Hungarian themes, are among Johannes Brahms’ most popular works today, and they were the most profitable for him in his own lifetime also. In 1850, Brahms was introduced to “gypsy-style” music through Hungarian violinist Ede Reményi, including the csárdás “Bártfai emlék” (Memories of Bártfa) by Hungarian composer Béla Kéler, which became the basis for Hungarian Dance No. 5. Arranged for many different instruments and ensembles over the years, the 1885 orchestration by Albert Parlow of Hungarian Dance No. 6 moved the key from the original D-flat to D major, though the key for No. 5 remains the same as the original piano version. This edition includes both tenor and bass clef parts for the trombones. Study score. | 1+Picc.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp.Perc(2): Str(9.8.7.6.5 in set) | |

| 6273 | 5B545C4B-126A-461F-BF98-0FD3609A1FFE | 10370105 | 48 Folk Songs for Strings | When arranged in systematic and progressive order, our rich heritage of folk music offers a welcome addition to the literature for elementary string instrument instruction. Although this edition is not the first to present such material in practical form, it is unique in that it is organized in such a way that it may be used to supplement any string method in which finger patterns are introduced as special units of study. The purpose of this edition is two-fold: first, to provide tuneful and interesting material for the beginning and intermediate string class at the elementary school level and, second, to provide easy solo literature for the violin, viola, cello or double bass student in a school or private studio situation. This version of 48 Folk Songs has been edited by Lynne Latham for today’s string practices. Piano Accompaniment is available separately. | Double Bass | |
