Modeled more on Arcangelo Corelli's concerto da chiesa and concerto da camara than on Antonio Vivaldi's three-movement form adopted by J.S. Bach, these 1739 works were composed to be performed during the intermissions of Handel's oratorios. Among the twelve Concerto Grosso can be found a mixture of original music and music borrowed from other works by the composer. No. 4 in A minor, HWV 322 is predominantly newly composed, the final allegro borrows from the aria È si vaga of Handel's Italian opera Imeneo. The four movements, conceived separately, are intended to have the feeling of a suite rather than a verbose, heavy interpretation of the concerto form. The 1st movement, "A Little Parlour Music", carries the subtitle "after Poulenc" in a reflection of the lightness and charm of that composer's work. The 2nd movments, "Remembrance of Things Past", is the most expressive of the movements. The 3rd movement, "Santa Barbara Rag", is full of syncopated rhythm and humor with even a slight reference to another well-known rag. And the 4th movement, "John Adams Light", looks back at the early minimalism of Adams with its repitition and constant motion. The concerto is available with piano reduction and for rental with the full orchestra accompaniment. | Violin and Piano | |
| 6449 | 5DFDE04F-1073-4EDB-98E2-FA2C2ACAC4A0 | A638002 | Aladdin Suite, Op. 34/F. 89 | Danish composer, Carl Nielsen (1865-1931), was commissioned by the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, to write incidental music to a new production of Adam Oehlenschläger’s "dramatic fairy tale" Aladdin, or The Miraculous Lamp, which was to be presented in February of 1919. Nielsen, always modest and regarding himself as primarily a musical craftsman, undertook the commission happily, writing much of this imaginative and melodic music in 1918. While Nielsen's symphonies are seen as more dramatic and experimental, this light-hearted incidental music still exhibits his originality, with his progressive harmonies and approach to the exotic dances. Regrettably, the director of the play altered the instrumentation so that he could use the orchestra pit to build an extended stage, and he cut a significant portion of the music, leading to a furious Nielsen demanding that his name be removed from both posters and programs from the soon-to-be failed production. Still, the music proved very popular as Nielsen would frequently conduct various extracts both in Denmark and abroad to great acclaim. Seven of these extracts were combined into a suite after Nielsen's death. Movements: 1. Oriental Festival March; 2. Aladdin's Dream/ Dance of the Morning Mist; 3. Hindu Dance; 4. Chinese Dance; 5. The Marketplace in Isphahan; 6. Dance of the Prisoners; 7. Negro Dance. | 6452 | 5E09A0EA-51CB-4607-86A5-F6488FCE2FE4 | A225302 | Siegfried Idyll, WWV 103 | Richard Wagner (1813-1883) composed the symphonic poem Siegfried Idyll, WWV 103 in 1870 as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, following the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. Originally written for a small chamber orchestra of 13 players (flute, oboe, two clarinets, bassoon, two horns, trumpet, two violins, viola, cello, and bass), Wagner had members of the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich assemble on the stairs at their villa at Tribschen (Lucerne), Switzerland on Christmas Day, 1870 and start the music to wake the sleeping Cosima. While the piece was intended to remain private, Wagner felt pressured to sell the work in 1878 with expanded orchestration due to financial concerns, though the larger orchestra retains the expressiveness and intimacy of the original. Some of this music also found itself incorporated into Wagner's 1876 opera Siegfried, particularly the love duet between Brünnhilde and Siegfried, Ewig war ich. The work also borrows the melody from the German lullaby Schlaf, Kindlein, schlaf (Sleep, Children, Sleep). Instrumentation: 1.1.2.1: 2.1.0.0: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). The poor reception of the original four-act version persuaded Puccini to revise it twice over the course of two years, the second being a shortened three-act version. The last revision came in 1905, at which point, Puccini gave up trying to correct what he perceived to be the dramatic flaws in the work. The story depicts the Flemish knight Edgar who spurns the love of the virtuous Fidelia and elopes with her adopted sister, the sensuous Tigrana. In the Act I aria QUESTO AMOR, VERGOGNA MIA, he reflects on his unreciprocated and forbidden love for her. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 4.0.0.0: Hp: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set) [solo baritone].
