| Program Notes | La Face Cendree is a setting of two of Arthur Rimbaud's Illuminations. It attempts to translate into music the resonance of the boy-poet's wild imagery, which is by turn hypnotic and hallucinatory, ecstatic and repellent. This score was composed in just six days, and shares the saccharine douceur and theatricality which seem innate to all French music -- at its weakest and at its best. --Harold Blumenfeld |
