466242BF252B-9E3C-48BC-8934-020EC64A2801S1016CBHope ArisesHope Arises is one of two new works requested in 2021 of composer James Barnes by Colonel Donald Schofield, to be written for the United States Air Force Band. It is a short piece intended to be used as an “opener” for AFB's tour concerts. It opens with a dramatic brass fanfare, based on consecutive perfect fourths first introduced by horns and euphoniums, followed by a short oboe solo. An ascending line in mallets and woodwind provide a rather celestial transition, taking the listener to a lively, melodic allegro, which is based on the same opening fourths. This allegro theme is developed until a return to the opening fanfare is powerfully re-announced in brass. The work concludes quite dramatically, and includes a return of the ascending line in woodwinds, mallets, harp and piano.Concert Band
466342BF8737-B499-4F07-B1CD-CFA9A2A18D37R01520RavanCommissioned by the Pittsburgh Orchestra and dedicated to composer David Stock, Ravan is the Persian word for "flowing." The work is a short scherzo with a fast first section alluding to the turbulent white waters of the Youghiogheny River in Pittsburgh, a calmer middle section, like a trio, and a recapitulation of the fast section.2(1dPicc, 2dAFl).2(2dEH).2(2dBCl).1+Cbsn: 2.1.1.1: Timp.Perc(2).Pno.Hp: Str

466842D97D1D-752C-4274-B6A4-18A3EBDE4C09A187402Concerto for Violin No. 1 in D, Op. 6 (original)Violin virtuoso and composer Niccolò Paganini's (1782-1840) Concerto for Violin No. 1 in D, Op. 6 was written between 1817 and 1818, with the premiere taking place on March 31, 1819, in Naples, Italy. The work was originally written in the key of E-flat, with the orchestral parts all written in that key, while the solo violin was written in D and instructed to play with a half-step scordatura. This was done to make some of the extremely technical solo sections possible on a single string, but it also somewhat muffled the string section of the orchestra, permitting the soloist to better standout. Likely to avoid the scordatura, a version was later created in the key of D. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.1+CBsn: 2.2.3.0: Timp.Perc(2): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Violin not included in set. 467142E055DB-6E47-4276-BC66-E1C521B8391A52250418Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte (string orch., Atwell)Originally written in 1899 by Maurice Ravel for solo piano, and later orchestrated by the composer, PAVANE POUR UNE INFANTE DÉFUNTE (PAVANE FOR A DEAD PRINCESS) remains one of the enduringly popular of Ravel's works, though the title can be a curiosity for many. Ravel said of the work, "Do not attach any importance to the title: I chose it only for its euphonious qualities. Do not dramatize it. It is not a funeral lament for a dead child, but rather an evocation of the pavane [a stately, 16th-century Spanish court dance] which could have been danced by such a little princess as painted by Velázquez." This arrangement by Shirl Jae Atwell retains the lush, romantic sound of the original through the use of extensive divisi.String Orchestra
