All the melodic lines are written in the Dorian mode (D minor) and except for the modern snare drum, the percussion evokes the character of the Middle Ages (tom-tom, tambourine, and field drum). The flute part may be played by one player or as many as the director has at their disposal. The percussion requires four players. The work as a whole is meant to encourage other disciplines in a school's departments to collaborate and participate, be it dancers, the art department designing costumes, or the English department using it to discuss medieval poetry.
