The clarinet and its ancestors are participants in the folk dances of North Africa, Greece, Scotland, Spain, and Israel. In "Dances Concertantes" the folklore is sometimes real, sometimes mythical. The theme of the Prelude is the connecting link between the different dances. It is possible that it is a moment of introspection before the whole Earth is going to dance to many rhythms, but one voice.

Program Notes
Near the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, I have seen a group of Indians dancing to the sounds of ancient Inca instruments. However, as I was getting closer I noticed that one of the musicians was playing the clarinet, right there in the Andes. The experts on ethnic music have told us that the clarinet and its ancestors are participants in the folk dances of North Africa, Greece, Scotland, Spain, and Israel. In America, during the Jazz Age, the clarinet was the king of the ballroom, as Benny Goodman was King of Swing. It is the joyful voice of wedding celebrations, the echoes of a scream when the party is over, the playful call while the couples get ready, the secret duet with the inviting whisper. In the "Dances Concertantes" the folklore is sometimes real, sometimes mythical. The theme of the Prelude is the connecting link between the different dances. Perhaps it is the symbol of a communion; perhaps it is many memories. It is possible that it is a moment of introspection before the whole Earth is going to dance to many rhythms, but one voice.
