| 3245 | 2E019AF9-57CE-4C28-8E84-F61A4E420AB2 | MP625001 | Evensong for Horn and Guitar | From the composer: EVENSONG was composed at the request of my friend David Wick, principal hornist of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. He asked that I compose a recital piece for him to play with the orchestra’s music director, JoAnn Falletta, who is also a virtuoso guitarist. The only stipulation he made was that the work include fragments of one of his favorite melodies, “Lasst mich allein,” from Four Songs, Op. 82, by Antonín Dvořák. The melody is also quoted in the Adagio movement of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B Minor, Op. 104, B. 191. The music is absolute in nature and cast in the form of a single movement fantasy based loosely on Dvořák’s melody, which is stated at the outset and at the conclusion. | Horn and Guitar | |

The work consists of four movements, and in addition to the more standard percussion, it made use of several (then) novel keyboard percussion instruments made by J. C. Deagan, for which the score explicitly calls. The orchestra version premiered on June 8, 1916, at the summer Norfolk Festival, with Arthur Mees conducting and Grainger at the piano. Movements: 1. Arrival Platform Humlet; 2. Gay but Wistful; 3. Pastoral; 4. "The Gum-suckers" March. Both the orchestral version and the 2-piano version are available from Edwin F. Kalmus. | 3260 | 2E3ADEB6-75D5-4D79-A97D-BB97F53AAC55 | M804990 | Pizzicati | Delibes' music for the ballet Sylvia was often considered more interesting than the ballet itself. It was far ahead of its time in terms of instrumentation (making much use of the newly invented saxophone). The scherzettino known as Pizzicati is an excellent example of how Delibes dictated action, as you can almost hear a story unfold as the music plays. | String Orchestra |
