32622E484C21-F150-42E5-B180-226791A99B21SO181CThe RockTHE ROCK was composed on guitar and then scored for string orchestra. The ostinato phrase repeats itself multiple times forming the rhythmic section for a blues-like melody. To maximize audience enjoyment, it is recommended that the ensemble practice the piece to a click track to get the timing right, particularly the artificial harmonics at the exposition.String Orchestra

The patterns of bowing across the strings suggest a crossing, or 'arcing' motion rising at the end into an image of "An Arc in the Sky."Cello Solo: String Orchestra

32692E67B639-01A9-4337-BE18-7B5A184A57F2S770CBPanther FirePanther Fire was commissioned by Miriam Muniz-Schwab and the Pflugerville Panther Band and recevied first price in the National Band Association Grade III/IV Composition Competition. The outer sections of the work are extremely energetic and exciting, and each section of the band is given an opportunity to shine. The middle section features the woodwinds and horns, who present chorale-like statements of a tranquil and lyrical theme. This material gradually grows into a broad and majestic presentation of the theme for the entire ensemble, which in turn leads to a dramatic restatement of the energetic opening.Concert Band
32702E67BC23-F2C3-4BE1-AD45-0A29F215813CEBM210361Night Pieces: Five Preludes for PianoI had an overwhelming experience at Pierre Boulez's Domaine Musical concerts, as well as those of the French Radio (ORTF) that also specialized in the very newest music (a year-old piece was already passé). Although there seemed little interest in the Boulez-Stockhausen-Berio musical world in the U.S. when I returned in 1961, I would as pianist set out to rectify this omission, then only successfully on the West Coast. Night Pieces was written in Paris, shortly after I began my acquaintance with the current European international style, and premiered there. I never, however, wanted to eschew any musical reference from the past, including tonality as so many composers did then-and the first sound in the pieces is a C-major triad, in 1960 a shocking chord. What I did absorb from the prevailing style was its liberation from regular meter, and the gestural language is largely derived from Boulez andrelated piano music. (The reference to Schoenberg in the last prelude is an hommage.) David Chaitkin, the dedicatee, also lived at the Cité Universitaire when I was there. A fine composer, not well known enough; he passed away in 2011. ---William BolcomPiano solo

32802E82D0E3-C0EC-4ACE-B118-133E4770E315MC831Lift Every Voice and Sing for Chorus and PianoThe poem “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was written by acclaimed African American poet James Weldon Johnson in 1900 and set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson in 1905. The Edward B. Marks Music Company first published the song in 1921, which remains strongly associated with social justice and patriotism, particularly in African American communities. While at one time it could be found pasted to the back of some hymnals used in African American Churches, today the song is formally printed under headings such as “national songs” or “social justice” in many modern hymnals. Other versions include a concert setting published in 1978 for SATB chorus and piano by Roland Carter, a setting by Hale Smith for SATB chorus and orchestra also dating from the 70s, and a modern R&B recorded version released in 1990 featuring Dione Warwick, Stevie Wonder and Take 6.SATB Chorus, Piano
