| 3163 | 2CCB1BE1-6008-4476-BEC1-93963CB448BE | A919990 | Sinfonia No. 10: String Symphony in B minor | This is the tenth among thirteen string symphonies written between 1821 and 1823, when Mendelssohn was twelve to fourteen years old. Like the other twelve, it was written as a tribute to early Classical symphonies by composers such as Haydn, J.C. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, and Mozart, a feature much more obvious in the first six as they were more imitative. The second grouping, starting with Sinfonia No. 7, show more of the composer's emerging personal style. Mendelssohn composed most of the thirteen string symphonies in three movements, but all that remains of his tenth is a single movement. Historians are unsure whether the work was meant to be a single or multi-movement work. Mendelssohn composed this piece with two separate viola parts. This edition was created by famous conductor Sir Neville Marriner. Composed of 150 vocal, chamber and solo piano pieces, the collection is grouped into fourteen albums, with the ordering of the works in each album not reflective of the dates or sequence of composition. Written as salon music, intended for performance in the privacy of Rossini's own drawing room, the entire collection was sold by Rossini's widow following his death in 1868. This edition of Vol. 5, titled ALBUM POUR LES ENFANTS ADOLESCENTS (ALBUM FOR ADOLESCENT CHILDREN), is written for solo piano and includes ten pieces across two books: M143491 and M143591. Included in Book 2: 1. Prelude Convulsif; 2. La Lagune de Venise a l'expiration de l'annee 1861!; 3. Un Saute; 4. Hachis Romantique. Edited by Sergio Cafaro. | Piano Solo | |

| 3174 | 2CEEAF76-4C01-468C-B3E7-E01FD9E5539B | A127002 | Leonore (Fidelio) Overture No. 3, Op. 72b | The history of Beethoven's only opera, FIDELIO, is rife with twists and turns, among them that the opera was originally to be called LEONORE. Additionally, the opera is unique in that Beethoven composed four different overtures for the work. No. 1 was quickly suppressed by the composer, whereas No. 2 (1805) better resembled the third one to follow in that it conveys the themes of the opera. LEONORE OVERTURE No. 3, Op. 72b was composed in 1806, and remains the most successful of the three LEONORE overtures. In 1814, Beethoven did finally complete an overture that he found suitable, but this was actually referred to as the overture for FIDELIO given the opera's title change. It satisfied Beethoven's vision of a proper curtain-raiser, although, unlike its LEONORE predecessors, it avoids themes from the opera proper. LEONORE OVERTURE No. 3 opens with a solemn, slow introduction, entirely fitting given the lofty themes of personal freedom under review in the opera, distilling the work's essence. | 3179 | 2D06A522-C270-4179-ABEB-368D8D61CDD4 | S376CB | Chorale Prelude in e Minor | In this piece, Reed uses one of the ancient chorale melodies, a tune that has been used by many other composers during the 300 years of its existence (including two settings by J.S. Bach. The composer's original edition first appeared in 1953, published by Charles H. Hanson Music Corporation. As was a common in the day, only a condensed score was published. The publication was acquired by Southern Music Company in 1966, and in 1996, in recognition of Alfred Reed's position as one of the most important composers of serious music for wind band, a full score of the piece was prepared. It is hoped that conductors will take advantage of this opportunity to reexamine this early masterpiece of Alfred Reed. | Concert Band | |
