The result was his first choral work, HYMNUS AMORIS, OP. 12, scored for soloists, choir and orchestra. The text from folklorist Axel Olrik, based on a draft written by Nielsen, was translated into Latin by Johan Ludvig Heiberg. He defended using the Latin language because of what he perceived as its emphasis of universality over personal expression. The piece premiered on April 27, 1897 at the Music Society in Copenhagen under the direction of the composer. | 3134 | 2C620BC0-928A-4EBD-9E08-D9E978641D12 | M388591 | Three Impromptus, Op. 78 | Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) composed his THREE IMPROMPTUS, Op. 78 in 1911, originally for organ, during the final year of his life. These compact yet expressive pieces reveal his mastery of Romantic idioms, blending lyrical melodies with rich harmonic textures that highlight the instrument’s coloristic possibilities. Although there is no evidence of a public premiere during his lifetime, the works were published shortly after his death and became part of the repertoire of church and recital organists in the early 20th century. Today, while not as frequently performed as his large-scale choral works such as HIAWATHA’S WEDDING FEAST, the IMPROMPTUS stand as elegant examples of Coleridge-Taylor’s compositional voice for the organ and are valued for their craftsmanship and charm, contributing to the ongoing rediscovery of his instrumental music. | 3140 | 2C76A59A-0077-41CD-856B-BBB5BDEADA1D | M314691 | 10 Canonic Studies, Op. 12 | George Whitefield Chadwick (1854-1931) was an American composer. Along with John Knowles Paine, Horatio Parker, Amy Beach, Arthur Foote, and Edward MacDowell, he was among those composers in what is called the Second New England School of American composers of the late 19th century. Chadwick's works are influenced by the Realist movement in the arts, characterized by a down-to-earth depiction of people's lives. His works included several operas, three symphonies, five string quartets, tone poems, incidental music, songs and choral anthems. Along with a group of other composers collectively known as the Boston Six, Chadwick was one of those responsible for the first significant body of concert music by composers from the United States. Himself an organist, this prominent American conductor and composer named each of these 10 short studies as a canon, followed by the most notable and relevant interval. For example, No. 1 is called "Canon in the Octave," while No. 9 is named "Three voiced Canon in the Fifth." | Organ |
