252723A68DA7-8BD8-42C4-AF78-1697140EB5AFX504043String Quartet No. 2Composed for the Stanford String Quartet for their tenth anniversary season in 1994; this vibrant, engergetic, joyful piece is virtuosic for all instruments. The first movement is full of outgoing gestures: noisy chords, bustling thematic material and a joyous melody. The second movement is a lullaby with a chaconne sung above it by a solo violin and contrasts the third movement's pizzicato feature.
Recorded by the Stanford String Quartet, Laurel Record CD LR-858.

Intrigued by the concepts, he sought to write an orchestral suite for seven of these astrological signs based on the planets known to the world at the time and imbue the music with the appropriate astrological meaning. Rather than order the planets as an astronomer would, Holst ordered them in such a way as to attain maximum musical effectiveness. Scored for a large orchestra, fellow composer Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote in 1920, "Holst uses a very large orchestra in THE PLANETS not to make his score look impressive, but because he needs the extra tone color and knows how to use it." Both "Mars, the Bringer of War" and this excerpt of "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity" are the most popular and well-known movements in the suite. This critical edition of the "Jupiter" movement by Clinton Nieweg and Gregory Vaught is based on the composer's manuscript. It is a unique approach to the story of Jesus Christ as it cuts off before the Crucifixion and Resurrection, making instead a much more personal portrayal of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, struggling with his own emotional turmoil before ultimately acccepting his fate. While the complete oratorio is among Beethoven's most rarely performed works, the finale chorus Welten singen Dank und Ehre, frequently referred to as the Hallelujah Chorus, has become very popular around the globe and frequently performed by church, high school, college, and professional choirs.
