| Program Notes | El Salon Medico pays tribute to Aaron Copland, with whom Schelle privately studied in 1977-1978. Copland's influence is, intentionally, unmistakable. El Salon Medico's rhythms, melodic fragments, buoyant energy, and colors are reminiscent of Copland's Rodeo and Appalachian Spring as well as his El Salon Mexico. In fact, the title of Schelle's work is a deliberate play on the title of El Salon Mexico, as well as the fact that Schelle's brother, to whom this piece is dedicated, is a doctor - "el medico" to his Spanish-speaking clientele. Although Schelle's style has evolved into quite different directions since 1977 (local audiences may remember his King Ubu and IWU's commissioned Seven Steps from Hell), he is still fond of this piece as an acknowledgement to his times with Copland. |
