The tremolo creates a dreamy, ethereal atmosphere, evoking the image of people singing and dancing under the soft glow of moonlight. The pizzicato in the lower strings enhances the rhythmic feel of the dance, adding depth and energy to the overall composition. | String Orchestra

Composed in 1889 and 1890, it is the only one of these works, besides two short pieces for violin and piano which eventually faced revision, to which an opus number is attached. The quartet premiered on October 13, 1890 at the Helsinki Music Institute. In February 1894, Sibelius arranged the third movement as a PRESTO for string orchestra, adding a double bass part, but leaving the other parts unaltered. The first performance took place on February 17, 1894 in Turku, the composer directing the Orchestra of the Turku Musical Society. Resulting from a request to the composer by the Miami Ring Theater to compose incidental music for their 1974 production of OTHELLO, the music for sixteen brass and four percussion reflects the director's conviction that almost the entire play takes place on a military encampment in a time of war, and so is imbued with the tenseness and uncertainty of the time and place of the story. Alfred Reed later took the material and recomposed it for a concert band setting. The present setting, drawn from both the original score and the expanded one for band, retains both the scoring and color of the original instrumentation for its stage use, as well as the purely musical re-working of the material as a developed concert piece. Movements: I. Prelude (Venice), II. Adbade (Cyprus), III. Othello and Desdemona, IV. Entrance of the Court, V. The Death of Desdemona, Epilogue | Brass Ensemble

Recorded on Naxos: JoAnn Falletta, London Symphony Orchestra; Timothy Jones, soloist. Canticle to the Sun is based on the familiar hymn tune 'All Creatures of our God and King'. This is an imaginative idea where the soloist emerges from a tinkling backdrop and retains clear contact with the melody throughout, although it is never stated in full. The concerto adds up to a pastoral idyll with occasional spots for the timpani and lyrical cadenzas. | Horn Solo, Orchestra
