All versions have been written in the same concert key so virtually your entire band can rehearse at the same time. Some independence in rhythms is required, with each player getting a brief solo passage. The trio opens with a very short and simple eight measures of legato playing, and quickly moves into a moderate polka tempo and style. The polka begins with all playing the same rhythms, but branches into some independent rhythms. This is an excellent choice for a first trio experience in contest. | Flute 1, 2 and 3

When he composed it in the autumn of 1741, he had just finished work on The Messiah. The libretto, based on John Milton’s Samson Agonistes, was written by Newburgh Hamilton. The work premiered at Covent Garden in London on February 18, 1743. It achieved so much acclaim that six more performances were presented that season. Originally wanting to end his oratorio on a tragic note, Handel provided a brighter ending with an aria for soprano, "Let the bright Seraphim," which precedes a celebratory final chorus. There is lots of independence between sections and a fair amount of chromatics, as well as some divisi in the second violins. Some sections have pizzicato work, and the second violins have a couple of short sections of louree? bowing. There is some wide arpeggiated work for the cellos that may require extra attention and, of course, smooth flowing legato phrasing is a must. | String Orchestra

| 16413 | F047EF4F-EAC9-4F5A-A6A2-41D81E1B7A9E | R01289 | Homage to Tchaikovsky | Homage to Tchaikovsky was written for a commission from the Santa Barbara Symphony and its conductor, Gisele Ben-Dor. The work was conceived for a series of concerts whose theme was "Mostly Tchaikovsky." While inspiration is taken from various Tchaikovsky works, the overall effect is a work by a 21st Century composer, rather than a "suite" of Tchaikovsky pieces. Homage to Tchaikovsky uses the same orchestration of the 3rd Symphony and 1st Piano Concerto, a standard orchestra with woodwinds, brass, timpani and strings. | 2+Piccolo.2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timpani: Strings | |

The arrangement for strings and jazz rhythm section is an effective contrast to strings alone.
