| 16424 | F0688FD5-C860-470D-A9AB-356FFB5DD10B | A935290 | Concerto for Piano No. 1, Sz.83 | Despite its greater popularity now, Béla Bartók’s (1881-1945) CONCERTO FOR PIANO NO. 1 was universally panned by critics after its premiere due to its harshness; the innovative use of tone clusters as pioneered by Henry Cowell and Bartók’s use of his characteristic percussive martellato technique stood in stark contrast to Bartók’s earlier Baroque-influenced style. To emphasize the importance of percussion in the piece, Bartók stipulated in a note that percussion instruments were to be placed next to the piano during performances. The concerto premiered in Frankfurt in July 1, 1927 with Bartók himself as the soloist. | 16428 | F08FFDB3-ED5A-4B40-9F75-304A2AA6E496 | X814011 | Struwwelpeter | Struwwelpeter is a cycle of little songs and stories about naughty children and the consequences of their rambunctious behaviors. These old-fashioned poems were written in the 1850s by Heinrich Hoffmann as Christmas gifts for his children and many young nieces and nephews. Schelle dedicated the songs to his parents for their 50th Anniversary, concluding his program notes for the premiere with a wry explanation for the inspiration behind the piece: "(my parents) often read these poems to me in my childhood and, in doing so, may have helped to keep me from being one of the rapscallions included in any new, revised, updated collection...maybe." Poem titles: I. Slovenly Peter, II. The Story of Flying Robert, III. Cry Baby, IV. Fat Augustus Who Wouldn't Eat Any Soup, V. Cruel Frederick, VI. Little Conrad Suck-a-Thumb. Versions for voice and piano and voice and chamber ensemble are available from the publisher. | Soprano or Tenor, Piano | |

The piece generally follows Baroque structure while adding more modern and personal elements, including harmonies reminiscent of the Romantic era and a Swiss folk melody in the third movement, Pastorale and Rustic Dances, that nods to Bloch’s Jewish heritage. CONCERTO GROSSO NO. 1 premiered in Cleveland, Ohio on May 29, 1925. Instrumentation: String Orchestra (8-8-5-5-5 in set) and Piano Obbligato. Movements: 1. Prelude; 2. Dirge; 3. Pastorale and Rustic Dances; 4. Fugue. Reprint edition. | String Orchestra (8-8-5-5-5 in set) and Piano Obbligato | |
