Its commission was arranged by his friend, composer Darius Milhaud, whose own ballet, "The Creation of the World," had its world premiere on the same program. A satire on American life and the mythology of instant success, Porter's music displayed the influence of Stravinsky, Milhaud and jazz, encompassing parody and exaggeration. In 1969, William Bolcom reconstructed the music from Porter's scoring for three and four pianos and made settings for two pianos and for orchestra. Utilizing Bolcom's reconstruction and adaptation, Phillip J. Lang, arranger of many Broadway shows, such as "My Fair Lady" and "Annie," has created this concert band arrangement. | Concert band

Ravel later orchestrated both the third movement called "Une barque sur l'océan" ("A Boat on the Ocean" - dedicated to Paul Sordes) and the fourth movement named "Alborada del gracioso" ("The Jester's Aubade" - dedicated to Michel-Dimitri Calvocoressi) himself. Ernesto Halffter later orchestrated the fifth movement ("La vallée des cloches" - "The Valley of the Bells" - dedicated to Maurice Delage), as did Percy Grainger, while Felix Günther scored movement two ("Oiseaux tristes" - "Sad Birds" - dedicated to Ricardo Viñes). Orchestrations of movement one ("Noctuelles" - "Moths" - dedicated to Léon-Paul Fargue) are more recent. This edition of the composer's transcription of "Une barque sur l'océan" has been edited by Clinton Nieweg and Nancy Bradburd. The soloist plays the clarinet first in its entire construction and gradually disassembles the instrument as he performs. As the name "lmmer Kleiner" implies, the solo instrument becomes smaller and smaller with each new movement, until the last portion of the solo is played using only the mouthpiece. | Clarinet and Piano
| 16498 | F161EDEB-2DDE-4EB3-8C69-8C1C8265FA44 | M907402 | The Warriors | Composed 1913-16 and dedicated to Frederick Delius, The Warriors: Music to an Imaginary Ballet was originally composed for full orchestra. It is Grainger’s longest single work, nearly 20 minutes of sustained fantasy. “No definite program or plot underlies the music, though certain mind-pictures set it going,” the composer wrote. Grainger valued the clarity and transparency of sound in the pitched percussion, which he found particularly useful for what he called “double-chording,” a sort of pantonality with “unrelated chord-groups passing freely above, below, and through each other, without regard to the harmonic clash resulting therefrom.” Though this transcription for large wind band features a slightly reduced version of the original's considerable percussion battery, a full performance will still require 10 players, plus harp and two pianos. Dedicated to Col. Lowell E. Graham, Commander/Conductor, The United States Air Force Band, Washington, D.C. A 9x12 score comes with the set of parts, but an 11x14 score is also offered separately by the publisher. | Concert Band | |

Initially in two parts with five movements, it was described at the premiere as a symphonic poem, though the composer seemed to think it more a symphony still. Over the course of the next eight years, Mahler made numerous major revisions, including removing the additional movement (Blumine), until he finally arrived at the definitive four-movement form we use today. Still commonly referred to as the "Titan", that label was only used by Mahler for the second and third performances and was never applied to the final version of the work. Mahler incorporates German lied as his melodic material throughout this work, one of the innovations he brought to the symphonic form.
