An arrangement for wind band was published in 1891. Glen Miller released a 78 single of the march for Victor Records in 1942. The recording reached 15th place on Billboard that year. Typical of the patrol format, the march depicts a military band approaching, walking past, then receeding into the distance. This 1943 arrangement for orchestra was completed by Henry Sopkin. | 16307 | EEAC4AE5-EE07-489E-B8E5-3EE27B35B62B | R01017 | Funebre | Funebre, the third movement from Four Movements for String Quartet and String Orchestra, was written in memory of the composer's father and was inspired by Act 3 of Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde (Tristan's lament, "Die alte Weise," Act 3, Scene 1). The Persian melodies in the solo violins, which symbolize wailing over the death of the beloved, are superimposed on Tristan harmonies throughout the movement. Persian and Western metaphors of love and death are intermingled in a pluralistic musical symbolism. --Riccardo Schultz | Violin Solo: String Orchestra (8.8.6.4.4 or 6.6.4.4.2)

They are presented in such a way as to be playable with any combination of strings (as the piano accompaniment can be used to fill in any missing parts, or to strengthen weak sections), with a variety of difficulty levels available in the violin parts, thus enhancing the value of this collection. The compositions in this volume have been selected for their programmatic and educational as well as developmental values. The material has also been compiled with the viewpoint of keeping it interesting from the melodic, rhythmic and harmonic outlook, and to instill well-balanced musicianship. | 16314 | EECE0282-1C76-49F3-915D-EBA43069C004 | 20413104 | Minuet and Trio | This is an original composition with the melodies constructed in the style of a traditional Baroque minuet, but harmonized in a much later style. The quartet begins in E-flat major and switches to A-flat in the trio. In the trio section, flutes are paired for duets that will give each player the opportunity to be heard distinctly, requiring excellent tone, intonation and rhythm by all four players. Only limited range is required from high E-flat down to G in the staff. Duration is just under three minutes. There are frequent ritards, a tempi and other indications for rubato which offer excellent training in playing together as an ensemble. OMEA Class: C | Flute Quartet

| 16317 | EED35C41-C2C0-4A40-B5AC-C8CBCC23E8A7 | 50250190 | Les Matadors | Les Matadors represents an English country dance from Ignatius Sancho’s "Minuets Cotillons & Country Dances" for the Violin, Mandolin, German Flute, & Harpsichord, originally published in 1775. Sancho’s original Les Matadors piece is accompanied only by a second instrument in quarter and half notes. Dión Morales arranged Les Matadors employing two-part writing in D major for string orchestra, exploring interesting dynamics, and conversations between groups of two instruments. Accents and skips hold the students’ attention as they learn 2/4 time. Students’ imaginations will create a Matador, in his colorful and grand traje de luces or “suit of lights,” posturing with the bull in the arena. | String Orchestra | |
