An arrangement for wind band was published in 1891. Glen Miller released a 78 single of the march for Victor Records in 1942. The recording reached 15th place on Billboard that year. Typical of the patrol format, the march depicts a military band approaching, walking past, then receeding into the distance. This 1943 arrangement for orchestra was completed by Henry Sopkin. The quartet begins in E-flat major and switches to A-flat in the trio. In the trio section, flutes are paired for duets that will give each player the opportunity to be heard distinctly, requiring excellent tone, intonation and rhythm by all four players. Only limited range is required from high E-flat down to G in the staff. Duration is just under three minutes. There are frequent ritards, a tempi and other indications for rubato which offer excellent training in playing together as an ensemble. OMEA Class: CFlute Quartet
