16163ECB57349-DD45-4A2B-B575-950FC041E1FBB394302Three Revelations from Lotus Sutra: Movement I - AwakeningThree Revelations from the Lotus Sutra is an attempt to realize in music three different states of man’s soul in his quest for ultimate perfection. The Lotus Sutra is the teaching of human respect, self-perfection and world peace – in a word, humanism, leading mankind from division to unity, from discord to harmony, from conflict to peace. I. The first movement, Awakening, (To Awaken to the Light of the Universe) portrays the vastness and richness of the experience of the human mind on expanding its field of view from the narrow confines of daily life to the contemplation of, and merging with, the entire universe. II. Contemplation (To Contemplate the Depths of the Soul) represents a turning-away of the mind from the “outer” to the “inner” universe -- the attempt to fathom the limitless possibilities of the human consciousness in its quest for identity, to answer the eternal questions beginning with the word “Why?” III. Rejoicing (To Rejoice in the Beauty of Peace) depicts the realization that, while on earth, peace is not merely the absence of war, destruction, pain and suffering, but a thing of beauty in and of itself, and an occasion for heartfelt rejoicing on the part of all men everywhere, who share the same eternal quest as true brothers. This suite was commissioned by, and is reverently dedicated to, Rissho Kosei-kai, on the occasion of the 77th birthday of its founder and president, the Reverent Nikkyo Niwano. 16172ECE0D95C-EE68-43A0-BD79-808290EDD44650401001For the Beauty of the Earth for Flute and Tuba DuetThis duet of unusual instrumentation was written for the composer’s sister-in-law and husband. Based upon the popular hymn tune (also known as “Dix”) of the same name, the work presents four subtle variations of the melody. First published in 1830, the tune by Conrad Kocher is also sung to the text “As With Gladness Men of Old,” which tells of the visit of the Magi. William Henry Monk revised the hymn at some point and it is this version that appears in hymnals today.Flute, Tuba

16174ECE32F50-53EE-403F-8250-115CD328CD61A604990Summer SkiesLeroy Anderson completed four works in 1953: "Song of the Bells," "Summer Skies," "The Girl in Satin," and "Concerto in C for Piano and Orchestra." He commissioned a modern home for himself and his family on Grassy Hill in Woodbury, Connecticut. He was Guest Conductor in concerts at the University of Michigan, at Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Cleveland, Ohio, Worcester and Boston, Massachusetts and Fairfield University, Connecticut. The Connecticut concert attracted a record-setting 8,500 people in the audience. While "The Girl In Satin" is in a Latin style, similar to "Serenata," and "Song Of The Bells" is a waltz, "Summer Skies" is much less descriptive than the other works he completed in 1953. "Summer Skies" evokes a softer, enigmatic mood, somewhat like his 1962 work "Balladette." - Program note from Leroy Anderson's website. 16177ECED685D-7E1C-4A6A-AB9A-0FD66639528CA929190Mississippi Suite, A Tone JourneyFerde Grofe's (1892-1972) Mississippi Suite depicts scenes along a journey down the Mississippi River, from its headwaters of Minnesota down to New Orleans. The work was composed in 1926 and first performed that year by Paul Whiteman's Orchestra in New York City. Later, American lyricist Harold Adamson wrote words to the music from the ballad theme of the suite's final movement. The resulting song was called Daybreak. In July 1942, it was recorded and released by Harry James, Jimmy Dorsey, and Tommy Dorsey. All three versions made the top 20 in the National Best-Selling charts, with Tommy Dorsey and his vocalist, Frank Sinatra, peaking at number 10 in October. Sinatra later recorded it along with many of his 1940's hits on his 1961 reprise album, I Remember Tommy. Movements: 1. Father of Waters, 2. Huckleberry Finn, 3. Old Creole Days, 4. Mardi Gras.
