| 16083 | EBA544EA-63D6-487C-A1BE-9272111D8F6D | A677702 | Orient and Occident March, Op. 25 (composer's transcription) | The first of a few works that Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) wrote for wind band, ORIENT AND OCCIDENT, subtitled "grand march," better resembles a tone poem. Inspired by the world travels he undertook later in life, the piece has clearly-defined Western (Occidental) and Eastern (Oriental) sections. Beginning in the West with a rousing march melody and stirring, processional legato, the work leads into an homage to Turkish (then considered Eastern) janissary music, with melodies in the double reeds and jangling percussion. The work ends with a return to the West with a fugue on the original theme that leads to an exciting accelerating finale. This edition for orchestra was completed by the composer. | 16088 | EBAF38FD-572A-4A65-BB4D-4B98ED6F064B | S946CB | Eagle Squadron March | When the Second World War began, the British “March King” Kenneth J. Alford (pseudonym for Major F. J. Ricketts, R.M.) was increasingly in bad health and had composed relatively little music recently. As Hitler’s armies marched victoriously across Europe, Britain was soon alone facing the Nazi peril. Alford’s great contribution to the war effort was the composition of two of his great masterpieces - ARMY OF THE NILE, celebrating the first Allied victories over the Germans in North Africa and EAGLE SQUADRON. The latter of these marches celebrates American airmen who travelled to England during the early years of the war (before the entry of the United States into the conflict) to volunteer for service with the Royal Air Force, serving with great distinction during the Battle of Britain. Alford skillfully weaves a number of well-known tunes into the fabric of the music, including the “Royal Air Force March” and “The Star-Spangled Banner,” while also including a reference to the Siegfried motive from Wagner’s “Ring of the Nibelung.” Mark Rogers’ edition of this classic march includes a handsome full score and concert size set of parts. | Concert Band | |
| 16089 | EBB6AACA-CECF-409C-9A93-3CF229CB0FC7 | M254991 | Mananica Era (The Goddess in the Garden), No. 2 from Canciones Amatorias, H. 24 | Mañanica era (The Goddess in the Garden) is the 2nd song in a collection of seven settings of Spanish folk love poems called Canciones amatorias, H. 24. While the songs are difficult to date (likely sometime in the first decade of the 1900s), they are true representation of Enrique Granados' (1867-1916) personal musical language. The text, which includes both the original 17th century Spanish and an English translation by James Weldon Johnson, describes St. Juan's Day, which takes place every June 24th, and is celebrated in Spain much like St. Valentine's Day in English-speaking countries. Young girls place bowls of flowers outside their houses the evening before the feast. To the flowers they pin folded papers containing the name of one of their admirers. Early the next morning they look for the flower which first opens, and which bears the name of their Fate. | Soprano Voice and Piano | |

| 16099 | EBDB96A6-27C5-4E99-BEE7-2953464529F6 | 50250230 | American Frontier | AMERICAN FRONTIER for string orchestra was written utilizing various ensemble configurations from within the string orchestra. Solo lines, quartet, quintet, and sectional soli all help to make up the overall design and orchestral colors of the piece. As a juxtaposition to this, large divisi string writing is utilized to help balance the smaller ensemble writing within the score. The work is inspired by images of a western frontier…one filled with large fields, mountains and sunsets, as well as subtle character-filled details that would have a forward and fast-moving feel. | String Orchestra | |
