This duet of unusual instrumentation was written for the composer’s sister-in-law and husband. Based upon the popular hymn tune (also known as “Dix”) of the same name, the work presents four subtle variations of the melody. First published in 1830, the tune by Conrad Kocher is also sung to the text “As With Gladness Men of Old,” which tells of the visit of the Magi. William Henry Monk revised the hymn at some point and it is this version that appears in hymnals today.
