| 1569 | 16083665-26C6-4E46-BD3C-11ABEEA50B7B | A217702 | Hamlet: Fantasy Overture, Op. 67 | Written by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) in 1888, as he was working on his FIFTH SYMPHONY, HAMLET: FANTASY OVERTURE, Op. 67 is one of two works he based on Shakespeare’s HAMLET, the other being the incidental music Op. 67a. As early as 1876, his brother Modest had suggested he write a symphonic poem based on the material. Eventually approached by actor Lucien Guitry, he agreed to compose music for a stage production of the play. When the performance was cancelled, he went on to craft the material into a concert overture. Dedicated to Edvard Grieg, the work premiered on November 24, 1888 in St. Petersburg under the baton of the composer. Instrumentation: 3(3rd d. While technically written in only six weeks, much of the score is borrowed from Bellini's recent failure, Zaira. This rendition of the tragic story of star-crossed lovers premiered on March 11, 1830, at Venice's Teatro La Fenice, Pietro Tonassi conducting. The cavatina È serbato a questo acciaro (And reserved for this sword / is the vengeance of your blood) is sung by the tenor Tebaldo at the beginning of the first act. Giulietta (Juliet), a member of the Capuletti family, is betrothed to Tebaldo, and he states his intention in the song to avenge the family by killing Romeo, head of the rival Montecchi family and the person who had killed Giuletti's brother. The Russian composer was exposed to the saxophone late in life while staying in Paris, and he found the new timbre enthralling. This single-movement concerto and a saxophone quartet were the result. The work was completed in part due to the famous German saxophonist Sigurd Raschèr hounding Glazunov to the point where the composer wrote to a colleague that he had started the piece "under the influences of attacks rather than requests from the Danish (sic) saxophonist named Sigurd Raschèr." The work premiered on November 25, 1934, in Nyköping, Sweden, with Raschèr as the soloist. Glazunov probably did not hear the work performed, however, as the Paris premiere took place after his death. Instrumentation: Str (8-8-5-5-5 in set): Solo Alto Saxophone in set.
