Alexander Glazunov's (1865-1936) CONCERTO FOR ALTO SAXOPHONE in E-flat, Op. 109 was written in 1934. The Russian composer was exposed to the saxophone late in life while staying in Paris, and he found the new timbre enthralling. This single-movement concerto and a saxophone quartet were the result. The work was completed in part due to the famous German saxophonist Sigurd Raschèr hounding Glazunov to the point where the composer wrote to a colleague that he had started the piece "under the influences of attacks rather than requests from the Danish (sic) saxophonist named Sigurd Raschèr." The work premiered on November 25, 1934, in Nyköping, Sweden, with Raschèr as the soloist. Glazunov probably did not hear the work performed, however, as the Paris premiere took place after his death. Instrumentation: Str (8-8-5-5-5 in set): Solo Alto Saxophone in set. Reprint edition.
