With the original French title "Six Concerts à plusieurs instruments" (Six Concertos for several instruments), some feature multiple solo instruments in different combinations. These works are considered among the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque period. The Brandenburg Concerto No. 6, BWV 1051, takes a unique approach to ending the collection of six works, as it includes no violins, giving the most prominent role to the two violas da braccio (standard violas so called to distinguish them from the violas da gamba). Later in the work, the tonality turns to E-flat, and eventually returns to C minor. This intriguing music is characteristic of the Sturm und Drang movement, with its drastic changes in mood and dynamics, and would make a dramatic addition to any concert. | String Orchestra | |

| 1498 | 14CA9FE4-E35B-4AF7-9446-0D6D3A7289DA | S759CB | Two Solemn Pieces | These two selections by two different composers are strikingly individual while having a number of features in common: they are of about equal length, are serious and eloquent in character, and were written during the final portion of their respective creative periods. "Christus Factus Est" (Christ Became Man for Our Sake) was written by Anton Bruckner for unaccompanied chorus and exhibits many traits of the composer's mature style: chromaticall shifting harmonies, square-cut phrases often ending in moments of silence, and moods alternating between exaltation and serene contemplation. "Andante Festivo" by Jean Sibelius was written originally for string quartet, then expanded for full string orchestra. One of his last completed works, it took on partriotic significance after Russia invaded Finland in 1939. This flexible arrangement for band by Richard Thurston have been scored so that they may be performed by the woodwind choir of the band alone, brass choir and timpani alone, or by the full band, leaving interpretive tastes to the conductor as well as being adaptable to the abilities of the instrumental forces available. | Concert Band | |
| 1499 | 14CB622F-568B-4D5B-92C7-B53A24ECA3A3 | 50250196 | Lost City, The | The Lost City will inspire your students to create a musical story about a lost city from long, long ago. The Lost City is very proud and grand, with sweeping landscapes and a strong sense of an older time. Imaginations will be engaged as the students perform a wonderful, musical story. The piece explores e natural minor without accidentals, creating the feel of E Dorian Mode. Two-part writing allows all instruments to play melody and harmony. Some independent movement and harmony are present, creating depth and passing tones in the music. The flavor of the The Lost City results from accents, slurs, and hooked bows, bringing this composition by Seth Gamba to life for your string orchestra. | String Orchestra | |

Set in a the standard fast-slow-fast sonata form, the music extends to a high C with section requiring leaps from that range to pedal tones, then back up again, though the pedal tones can be performed up an octave. The second movement offers a nice break from the technically demanding first and third movements, with a long piano exposition before the trombone enters with a wholly lyrical passage. | Trombone Solo and Piano |
