The music is mostly in 1st position with only Viola 1 wandering briefly into 3rd position. Players will use pizzicato and a variety of bowing styles. Program Notes: Cielito Lindo (Lovely Sweet One) was popularized in 1882 by Mexican author Quirino Mendoza y Cortés. It is one of the most widely recognized tunes throughout the Spanish-speaking world as a symbol of Mexico. Naci en la Cumbre (I was Born on the Mountain) is a traditional Guatemalan folk song. Vuela, suspiro (Fly, My Sighs) is a traditional Costa Rican folk song. Ay! Tituy is a traditional folk song from Costa Rica. La Cucaracha (The Cockroach) is a traditional Spanish song, also trendy in Latin America. It is about a cockroach who can’t walk. The song came to symbolize the Mexican Revolution (1910-20) and Pancho Villa. | Viola Quartet

While Rimsky-Korsakov had completed the performing edition for solo piano of his friend Mussorgsky's work, he asked Tushmalov to orchestrate the work for a Rimsky-Korsakov conducted performance in Saint Petersburg on November 30, 1891. Tushmalov scored only the first of the "Promenades" and omitted three of the PICTURES: "Gnomus," "Tuileries," and "Bydlo." And according to a 193 letter from composer Alexander Glazunov, Rimsky-Korsakov also re-orchestrated "The Marketplace at Limoges," the middle section of "The Hut on Fowl's Legs," and the bells in "The Great Gate of Kiev" after discovering issues following the first rehearsal. While among the least complete of the orchestratations, the score retains a dark and restrained quality, causing some to claim that it is more authentically "Russian" than the more virtuosic adaptation by Ravel. When I first performed it with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony in 1955, the Maestro and I spent a year dwelling on the literary references to the score. He was also telling me the composer's requests as told to him when he was a young, budding conductor. Whether my recollections are factual is up for grabs. This edition reflects my understanding of the work and of Strauss's intentions, as honed by dozens of performances and recordings. This edition is part of the Starker Perfomance Editions series. | Violoncello and Piano

Bach (1685-1750) wrote the secular 'Hunting Cantata' (Jagdkantate) in 1713 for the occasion of Duke Christian von Sachsen-Weisenfels birthday. Sachsen-Weisenfels, a passionate hunter. The full title of the work is Was mir behagt, ist mur die muntre Jagd (What Pleases Me is Just a Jolly Hunt). The plot of the cantata involves Diana, goddess of the hunt, proving to her lover, Endymion, that she is not indifferent to him by inviting him to celebrate the birthday of Sachsen-Weisenfels at a party to be held in his honor. Another attendee is Pales, the goddess of shepherds and fields, and her aria Schafe konnen sicher weiden (Sheep May Safely Graze) compares the Duke to a good shepherd who cares for his subjects so that they may live in peace. The pastoral aria has endured as one of Bach's most popular works. This adaptation by Alfred Reed was prepared from the original version by Bach and remains true to the Baroque master's intentions.
