Program Notes
Tropes and Echoes, written in 1981 while on a Guggenheim Fellowship, is derived from Tesserae VII, a virtuosic piece for unaccompanied clarinet commissioned by clarinetist Murray Colosimo through the American Music Center commissioning program and subsequently recorded by him on Orion Records. Tesserae VII appears almost literally in the solo part of Tropes and Echoes, and its materials consistently determine the orchestral accompaniment. Hence, the ensemble work is a "trope" of the solo music, and the orchestra often "echoes" the solo part. The five sections are: Fantasia, Giocoso I, Song, Giocoso II, and Finale, which is comprised of an introduction, reprise of the Fantasia music, and an explosive coda. Both the Fantasia and the Finale feature extensive cadenzas for the clarinet soloist which include multiphonics and other extended techniques. A chamber version of Tropes and Echoes, prepared in 1986, was premiered at Merkin Hall in 1987 with Anand Devendra as soloist. --Brian Fennelly
