The SYMPHONY No. 3 in B minor, Op. 42 ("ILYA MUROMETZ" or "ILIA MOUROMETZ") is a programmatic work that depicts the life of folk hero Ilya Murometz, with each of the four movements depicting an episode of the epic. The 80 - 90 minute long work premiered on March 23, 1912, in Moscow by the Russian Musical Society Orchestra under the baton of Emil Cooper. In Movement IV, Les prousses et la pétrification d'Ilia Mourometz (The Feats of Valor and the Petrification of Ilya Muromets), Ilya defeats Batygha the Wicked and his army of pagans in a great battle. Ilya and his bogatyrs later encounter two heavenly warriors who multiply each time they are killed; pushed to retreat, Ilya and his men are transformed into stone. This movement quotes Taneyev's cantata JOHN OF DAMASCUS, Op. 1 quite frequently. The Kalmus edition of Glière's work is published in four volumes, one for each movement. Its first performance took place on January 26, 1790 at the Burgtheater in Vienna, Austria. Despite the strained credibility of the story, in which two men undertake a dare to deceive their lovers through feeble disguise and pretense in order to prove their faithfulness, Mozart enriched its characters with emotional depth, motivation, and humor. Though it took longer to achieve popularity than the other da Ponte operas, by the middle of the twentieth century, COSÌ FAN TUTTE had become a staple in opera houses all over the world. Don Alfonso wagers that he can make both Guglielmo and Ferrando’s girlfriends fall in love with someone else, so they dress up in costumes to try to woo the other’s girlfriend. When Fiordiligi is approached by the “strangers” she sings the aria COME SCOGLIO (Like a rock) telling them that she will not change her mind and to go away.
