Exclusively writing small-scale works, he explored the folk music of his native country, much of which evoked a fairy-tale Russia. His EIGHT RUSSIAN FOLKSONGS, Op. 58, display his deftness with colorful orchestration, an affinity he shared with his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov. Dedicated to the stage designer and illustrator Ivan Bilibin, the song cycle received its first performance in St. Petersburg on March 3, 1905 by the Assembly Hall of the Nobility Orchestra under the baton of Felix Blumenfeld. The solos in this book provide a smooth transition from the snare drum to the drum set by emphasizing technique and musical concept. And they relieve motivation problems by providing solos that are intended to be played without accompaniment, are interesting to the player and an audience, and make very good pieces for use in a contest situation. | Drum Set | |

| 14218 | D0E7EAD4-3CD8-401E-8883-A64ED2656C76 | A644290 | La Plus que Lente, L. 121 | Claude Debussy (1862-1918) wrote the waltz La plus que lente for solo piano in 1910, a work that may or may not have been inspired by a small sculpture on his mantelpiece. The title is meant to wryly suggest Debussy's intention to emulate the "valse lente" (slow waltz) that was all the rage in France at the time. An orchestration was also conceived in 1910, though Debussy opposed the heavier use of percussion and brass, then proposed his own lighter version, which was published in 1912. It is hoped that these three pieces will serve well as an introduction to Grainger's music, and that their appearance here is consistent with his desire to make his music available to all musicians, not just the more accomplished.
