| Program Notes | Ensphere is the third in a series of five compositions, which are related by various melodic shapes and motives. The five compositions are Sonaspheres 1, Nexus, Ensphere, TrOmPer, And Sonashpheres 2. All five can be programmed together as well as individually. Ensphere is a sixteen minute work in four major sections, delineated by tempo and, as the title implies, each essentially is self-contained. A principal feature of the first section is an unfolding crescendo/accelerando process which leads to the contrasting second section characterized by a constant moderately fast tempo in which the rhythmic structures are quite rigid. The third section is slow and relatively pulseless with quasi-improvisational aspects while the fourth section is fast, tightly controlled, with strongly accented figurations. The work closes slowly and quietly in a brief coda which recalls the opening gestures. All pitch material is drawn from a 12-tone set which each section being a series of variations enclosed in a form defined by tempi. --Frederick Fox |
