"ReTournai" by revisits the first 11 chords of the Agnus Dei of this Mass, a fascinating example of early functional chromatic harmony. Written for a quartet consisting of flute, trombone, marimba and piano, the first four melodic notes are F-E-F#-G, a sort of twisted version of the famous B-A-C-H motive. In "ReTournai" this material is juxtaposed and superimposed on a percolating toccata whose principal obsession is the way tempo shifts when fast notes of equal value are collected in groups of 3's and 4's. | Flute, Trombone, Marimba, Piano

The DIE ZAUBERHARFE OVERTURE is one such example. The incidental music to Georg von Hofmann’s play was first performed on August 19, 1820 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. Three years later, he used it as a replacement for another borrowed overture, this time introducing the incidental music to Helmina von Chézy’s play, ROSAMUNDE. It was heard again in this context at the same theater on December 20, 1823. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). | 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set)

Conceived as individual works, though commonly presented as a single work in six movements, each symphonic poem reflects the ideals of nationalistic music pioneered in the late nineteenth century, with each depicting an aspect of Bohemia's countryside, history, or legends. The second and most popular of the six symphonic poems, Vltava (The Moldau), describes the course of the Moldau River from its beginnings as two springs to its ends as a majestic and mighty river. Movements: I. The Two Sources of the Moldau; II. Forest Hunt, III. Peasant Wedding, IV. Moonlight: Nymphs' Dance, V. St. John's Rapids, VI. The Moldau at its Greatest Breadth, VII. Vyšehrad Motive (Symphonic Poem No. 1). Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(3): Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). | 13140 | BFF001EC-EE97-4733-9AD5-DC08717092E3 | M274891 | Romance in F for Viola and Piano, Op. 85 | Max Bruch (1838-1920) composed the ROMANCE (ROMANZE) in F, Op. 85 for Viola and Orchestra in 1911 as part of a group of works, written between 1909 and 1911, for specific performers with whom Bruch had a close relationship. In this instance, the ROMANCE was written for French violist Maurice Vieux, who gave the public premiere of the beautiful work, although a private concert given on April 25, 1911, by Bruch's conducting student Leo Schrattenholtz and his orchestral society, with Willy Hess as soloist, preceded that public performance. Bruch, known for his deeply rich melodies, was at the height of his compositional powers when he wrote this work, now a staple of the viola repertoire. This version for viola and piano by the composer of this gorgeous work is superb as a lyrical recital piece. The original orchestral accompaniment is available in the Edwin F. Kalmus catalog. | Viola and Piano |
