| 11803 | AC9ADD50-B378-4D94-95D0-EF72A54CD8A2 | X772003 | Pandora's Box | According to Greek Mythology, Pandora was the first woman on earth. She was sent by Zeus to Prometheus and Epimetheus as a punishment for stealing fire from heaven and giving it to man. Zeus gave Pandora a box and told her to not open it under any circumstance. Ignoring the warning, she opened the box allowing all manner of evil and sickness to escape and spread across the earth. Pandora tried to close the box but everything had escaped with the exception of Hope which remained. Therefore, it is said that no matter what evils are present in the world, Hope has not left us completely. In my composition, I have tried to recreate these events through a sound canvas of wind and percussion instruments. The "minimalist" nature of the piece helps to reinforce the nature of the myth. During the work's extended coda, new material is added with each repeat giving the listener an impression of increasing chaos (much like the evil and sickness escaping from the box). The piece concludes on a diminished fifth played fff by the low brass and timpani - Pandora's final attempt to slam the lid shut. Pandora's Box was commissioned by the University of Scranton Wind Ensemble, Cheryl Boga, Conductor. --Brett William Dietz | 3+Piccolo.1.3+Bass Clarinet.1. | 11804 | ac9dbfe3-9e3c-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | X521020 | Elegy for Sarah | This work for viola and piano was composed in memory of Sarah Gibson, the composer, pianist and educator who passed away in 2024 at the age of 38. From the program note by Donald Crockett: "This ELEGY FOR SARAH evokes a specific time and place: during the height of Covid, violist Kate Vincent and Sarah Gibson gave a backyard concert at Kate's and my house, in three sets, each with an audience of six on the driveway facing the music studio with Sarah and Kate making music just inside the open French doors. For the concert I chose an excerpt of a piece I'd written for Kate, now in an arrangement for viola and piano. This served as a point of departure for the ELEGY, with a tribute to Sarah's characteristic 'indie-rock' style and with a tombeau at its core. The cowbells framing the ELEGY, accompanying Sarah on her journey home, were hanging on the majestic oak tree in the backyard in clear view of our miniature concert." The violist also plays two "backyard Tibetan cowbells," which are available from the composer. | Viola (also plays two 'backyard Tibetan cowbells' and Piano | |
| 11805 | ACA28BE4-1E42-4B6D-80F5-D9457B1CDF4F | A267802 | Te Deum in C, K. 141/66b | Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) single setting of the Latin Christian hymn Te Deum was likely completed and first performed in 1769. All of the winds/brass, timpani, and the violas are not included in the score, suggesting that they are optional, although Mozart's manuscript being lost makes it more difficult to determine his intent. While the very earliest parts include two clarini (high trumpets) in addition to the two C trumpet parts, those clarini parts are played by oboes in this edition. Three trombones are also listed, but those parts appear to be missing. This piano reduction is by F.X. Marches were, and are, a favorite form for these bands and their appetite for new and interesting works was voracious. General Wooster March was quite the favorite in the General’s hometown and for years you could hear it sung by children throughout the community. It is a stirring march with roots in the circus tradition. | Concert Band | |

| 11817 | ACC80D1B-C5AA-4A10-881E-3C37AF14C148 | SO126C | Rach 2: Themes from Piano Concerto No. 2 | This arrangement uses the main themes of the second and third movements of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. It opens with the haunting Adagio sostenuto. At measure 16, the third movement’s rhapsodic main theme is introduced and developed. At measure 57, we return to the Adagio melody with the Moderato theme merging and dominating until measure 74 when the work closes with the initial theme. The Moderato theme is among the most beloved melodies of the 20th Century. Both themes in Rach 2 were featured in several movies. In first position for young people, this musical setting demonstrates the fluid relationship of 3 triplets against 2 eighth notes and the development of a long melodic line. | String orchestra | |

| 11819 | ACD79C32-E8DC-47B1-AA10-8273E2591939 | S969CB | Fanfare and Processional | Fanfare and Processional by celebrated composer James Barnes is a rousing concert opener for younger bands in the vein of the familiar Pomp and Circumstance by Edward Elgar. With generous cross-cuing in parts, careful consideration has been given with respect to the technical requirements of beginning musicians in this score. As suggested by the title, the work is also ideal as an occasional piece at ceremonies. | Concert Band | |
