11287A4E85C3C-6317-407B-A924-73AF8FB58FEEX120006Ideas: Short Etudes for Solo Oboe, Book IIIdeas: Short Etudes for Solo Oboe, Book II (1999) is a second set of etudes for unaccompanied oboe. It is substantially more difficult than Book I and is for the intrepid oboist, especially in its extensive use of the oboe’s uppermost register.
The work is dedicated to oboist Tedrow L. Perkins. The first movement, Skewered Justice, consists of a series of whirling phrases with dramatic contrasts between soft and loud. The second movement, Spacings and Echoes, is built with a variety of single-note motives with both rests and foot-stomps mixed in. The third movement, Scotch-Poppers, is a quick dance-like scherzo. (The movement was inspired by a story invented by the composer about a curious orange frog, named “Scotch-Poppers.”) The fourth movement, Barcarolle, is quiet and reflects on the composer’s visit to Venice, Italy (the place where the barcarolle was established). The final movement, Homage to Robert Ward (moto perpetuo), is a homage to the American composer Robert Ward. It is fast and furious with much energy throughout.
