| 11249 | A43C4EA7-0072-4CFC-90E4-AB0B483DDD9A | SO194C | Whispers of Color: Aria for Strings | Whispers of Color: Aria for Strings was originally a short sketch written for the Linn-Mar High School Symphony Strings, an ensemble that I have had the privilege and honor to work with and direct each day for over two decades. During the 2020-2021 school year we were under the restrictions of the pandemic which limited groups and ensembles from rehearsing in the same room. This of course posed a problem for many ensembles to function, and creative solutions were needed to keep our students engaged and moving forward. One such creative solution was to produce a short film with our ensemble providing the soundtrack for this film. For the music, we used a combination of new music written by the students and myself. The project was a success for all involved and kept many students engaged during a challenging time. The following year as restrictions were lifted, I decided to expand on what I had provided for our film and finished the sketch to form a fully written composition suitable for a live performance. As a result, Whispers of Color was born and premiered in the fall of 2021, performed by the Linn-Mar High School Symphony Strings under the direction of the composer. The composition features a beautiful and enchanting orchestration that utilizes flowing lines, short solo passages, and a variety of string effects such as pizzicatos, flautando bowing, and trills throughout the score. The formal structure of the piece is in ABA, using a soft entrance, a more intense middle section, and a return of the opening theme, while concluding in a peaceful manner. | String Orchestra | |

The success of 1899's ENIGMA VARIATIONS was followed by an initial failure of THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS, causing Elgar to become dispirited. Upon receiving a commission by the Royal Philharmonic Society, Elgar's spirits returned, describing the musical portrait of Edwardian London as follows: "I call it 'Cockayne' and it is cheerful and Londony- stout and steaky... honest, healthy, humorous, and strong, but not vulgar..." The alluded to vulgarity likely refers to some of the early Cockayne history, which presents an imaginary medieval place where the peasants live in an extreme luxury and every physical comfort and pleasure is always immediately at hand. Premiered in the Queen's Hall, London at a Royal Philharmonic Society concert on June 20, 1901, conducted by the composer, the work was dedicated to his "many friends, the members of British orchestras." An immediate success, the music became one of Elgar's most popular works. Sur les Lagunes [transposed in G minor] | The song cycle LES NUITS D’ETE (SUMMER NIGHTS) is a setting of six poems by composer Hector Berlioz' (1803-1869) neighbor and friend, Théophile Gautier. The text deals in themes of love in all its facets, progressing from youthful innocence to loss and renewal. Originally composed in 1841 for solo vocalist and piano, Berlioz completed orchestration of each of the six songs in 1856. While regrettably neglected for many years, this song cycle was rediscovered in the 20th century and has become one of the composer's most popular works. The songs in the original keys (1. A; 2. B; 3. F minor; 4. F-sharp; 5. D; 6. F) are available from the publisher both as a complete set (A2573) and individually. Robert Sutherland has edited five of the songs in the cycle and has transposed each in multiple keys to expand the work to more vocalists. Songs completed by Robert Sutherland: 1. Villanelle (E, F, and G), 4. Absence (Db, D, Eb, and E), 5. Au Cimetie?re, Clair de lune (Bb, B, and C), and 6. L'lle inconnue (D, Eb, and E). A transposition of 2. Le Spectre de la rose to D and a transposition of 3. Sur les Lagunes to g minor is also available from the publisher. Sur les lagunes is the lament of a Venetian boatman mourning the death of his beloved, knowing knowing the pain he'll experience sailing out to see unloved, expressed musically through somber harmonies imbued with melancholy, all over undulating accompaniment that suggests ocean waves.
