With a libretto written by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré, it received its premiere in Paris at the Theatre Lyrique on September 30, 1863. It ran for eighteen performances, then was not performed again until after the composer's passing. The opera opens with the chorus SUR LA GRÈVE EN FEU, in which a group of pearl fishermen sing of the perils they face and the dance rituals performed to drive away evil spirits. A programmatic symphony based on a poem of the same name written by Lord Byron, the work is demanding for orchestras, though some, including Arturo Toscanini, consider it among the composer's best works.
