The influence of the composer’s mentor, Paul Hindemith is evident in the tonal but non-diatonic harmonies, paired with Heiden’s own elegant melodic writing. Constructed in a loose rondo form, the work is light and tuneful, revealing a mastery of instrumentation, with graceful lines for the solo saxophone and accompaniment passages supporting lightly underneath it. Contrasting sections for wind and brass choirs, punctuated with full tutti ensemble provide interesting variety and underline climactic moments. "Nibelungen March" was an immediate success, the piece has appeared in numerous editions. Among the arrangements which are readily available today is one by M. Villinger, often heard in Europe. This edition by Tommy Fry is not so much a new arrangement of the work as it is an edition for American band instrumentation of Villinger's arrangement. Great care has been taken to preserve the unique quality of this German arrangement while making it accessible to bands with more contemporary instrumentation.Concert Band
