Comprised of 15 songs total by the end, each sets folktale texts, as published by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, to music with piano accompaniment, though some also have orchestral accompaniment. The eighth song, LIED DES VERFOLGTEN IM TURM (SONG OF THE PERSECUTED IN THE TOWER), is similar to the first song, DER SCHILDWACHE NACHTLIED. The Sentinel of that first song is now imprisoned, and in his same militaristic approach, he proclaims that his thoughts are free, though his body is not. His beloved speaks to him more tenderly through the prison walls, but he rejects her in his stoic acceptance of his fate. This Kalmus edition is presented in the original key of D minor for high voice. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo High Voice. During his final years, he recorded stories and song in his native language on Edison wax cylinders. Guitarist and composer Tom Taylor, of the performance faculty at Colorado College, composed a 17-minute evocative setting for three extracts of Ishi that successfully integrates the sound of modern American music in the Copland tradition with the modalities inherent to Ishi's tunes. | Recorded voice: 0.2.0.1: 2.0.0.0: Str | |
