Grogan had told the composer that he was of two minds about the military, and held his patriotism and love of country on one side, and more militaristic aspects of service on the other. This piece presents music from the patriotic/ love of country aesthetic simultaneously with the music from the military. The conductor offers one meter in the right hand and another in the left hand, with both meters sharing downbeats. This bilateral conducting represents a conductor who has had her corpus callosum (nerve system that connects the two halves of the brain) severed. Musicians are instructed to follow one half or the other. To emphasize the effect, the conductor may also visually split down the middle, with one half of the body white and the other black. | Concert Band

They work great for a teacher and students, a trio of students, or a whole group of students doubling or tripling the parts. When preparing these pieces, it is suggested that students learn all parts together and then take turns playing each one. | Low Brass Trio

Begun soon after Tchaikovsky established his relationship with long-time patroness Nadezhda von Mech, SYMPHONY No. 4 was dedicated to her, and she requested that the work include a program describing the work. The composer obliged, and the resulting program has resulted in the work sometimes receiving the nickname "Fatum" or "Fate." While the symphony was met with a lukewarm reception at its February 22, 1878 premiere with the Russian Musical Society under Nikolai Rubinstein, it has since become a staple of the concert repertoire. The current edition is the original Russian, but the German edition is also available from the publisher under publisher's code A6150.
