While he revisited the sketches in 1916–17, he fully devoted himself to this concerto during his 1921 summer holiday in Brittany, saying "I already had all the thematic material I needed except for the third theme of the finale and the subordinate theme of the first movement." CONCERTO FOR PIANO No. 3 premiered on December 16, 1921 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Frederick Stock and Prokofiev playing the solo. The work was not an immediate success until a 1922 performance in Paris conducted by Serge Koussevitzky, confirming this work in the 20th century canon. | 8666 | 7F6BF5EB-A202-4F32-B521-3510A8E9B65C | EBM0610627 | Graceful Ghost Rag for Band | His most popular work, William Bolcom describes his compositional approach to "Ghost" as being similar to Kreisler, with a little bit of Joe Venuti thrown in for good measure. The key to this work is found in its character, which evokes a melancholic sadness, a limpid gracefulness that is perhaps indicative of Bolcom’s enduring feelings for its inspiration, the memory of the composer’s father, Robert Samuel Bolcom. Adapted from his well-known piano composition, this moderate ragtime was arranged by the composer for symphony band. This work utilizes a transparent scoring style along with soloistic passages that contrast nicely with brief soli features for various sections of the ensemble. The lyric quality lends itself quite well to the rhythmic and syncopated style making it both uniquely elegant and rewarding. | Concert Band | |
| 8667 | 7F6C19A5-EE71-4F86-80C6-76E2CA9DA621 | 50250168 | Piddlin' | Piddlin’ is a loose double Rondo in a slightly modal D minor, with contrasting episodes in between the two main themes. The basses start off theme 1 with an ostinato. Violin 1, celli and basses will shift, with carefully marked fingerings to aid less-experienced students. This would make a wonderful review for high school students, because of all the varying rhythmic values. Counting is a must, along with maintaining a steady beat! | String Orchestra | |
| 8668 | 7F6C7B65-A49E-4312-BC3D-37918954E669 | W114791 | Adriana Lecouvreur | The four-act opera ADRIANA LECOUVREUR was composed by Francesco Cilea (1866-1950) and premiered on November 6, 1902, at the Teatro Lirico in Milan, with Angelica Pandolfini in the title role and Enrico Caruso in the role of Maurizio. The libretto is by Arturo Colautti, and it is based on a play by Eugène Scribe and Ernest Legouvé, where some of the characters are based on actual historical figures, although the story itself is fictional. Despite a plot that includes multiple romantic entanglements, unrequited loves, misunderstandings, and murder-by poisoned-violets, the work is considered among the verismo operas, if it is less realistic than others classified as such. The title role has remained a favorite for sopranos with large voices since its premiere, and the opera holds a regular place in the repertoire. Reprint edition. | 8672 | 7f7bcb22-9e39-11f0-a418-0022482c9682 | 60730004 | Sospiri, Op. 70 | Edward Elgar (1857-1934) composed his adagio for string orchestra, SOSPIRI, Op. 70, just before the onset of World War I. Originally planned to compliment his SALUT D’AMOUR for violin and piano, he decided that its intense nature of expression made it well suited it to be a stand-alone work for string orchestra, and it is often performed in that setting still. This version for cello and piano was transcribed by Julius Klengel. The original violin solo version and Klengel's transcription for viola solo is also available from the publisher.
