| 7747 | 718E00DF-BE41-499A-B4FB-958C2B225C44 | 20608395 | Howa Bouta Cha Cha | The title is a play on words. At a dance invariably a couple will approach the leader of the band in between tunes and say 'Howa Bouta Cha-cha'' Latin music is an excellent choice for large percussion ensembles because of the number of color instruments to be used in the accompaniment. This ensemble requires 9 players but it is advisable to have more than one player on at least some of the mallet parts. The ensemble must always strive for balance of parts, keeping the accompanying voices in that role. Some stickings have been marked to facilitate learning. This ensemble is lots of fun to play, with much to be learned as well, and enjoyable for the audience as well. | Orchetsta Bells, Xylophone (Marimba), Marimba, Timpani, Hi-Hat, Snare Drum, Bongos, Congas, Cow Bell and Shaker (Cabasa, maracas) | |

The first movement, an at-times melancholy and warm orchestration called I folketonestil (In Folk Style), was built on a melody provided to him by Fredrik Due, a Norwegian diplomat to Paris to whom the work is dedicated. The second is called Kulok og Stabbelåten (Cow-call and Peasant Dance) and is more festive than the first, though still in a stately fashion. | 7753 | 71B19D35-D267-4BB0-987B-C2CD492B5F13 | EBM0610097 | Concerto for Violin and Orchestra | Although widely heralded as a masterpiece, Sessions' brilliant Violin Concerto (1935) suffered through a painful adolescence. The original New York premiere was canceled by the soloist, and the work was not performed there until 1959; only recently has the work begun to find the respect which it deserves. The finale is a nerve-wracking exercise in perpetual motion. Albert Spalding, who was to have played the solo part in the premiere, objected to the movement's relentless intensity and eventually declined to play the piece. It would be up to the New York Philharmonic's new music director -- the young Leonard Bernstein -- to resurrect Sessions' hopes for a New York premiere. - Description by Blair Johnston. Movements: 1.
