The story, set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, tells of tragic love challenged by jealousy and loyalty to country and family. Commissioned by Cairo’s Khedivial Opera House, it was premiered there on December 24th, 1871 in a performance conducted by Giovanni Bottesini, although, due to a limited audience, Verdi considered the performance at La Scala in Milan on February 8th, 1872 to be the true premiere. At the beginning of Act II, Scene 1, the people celebrate the victory of Radamès over the Ethiopian army, with the chorus singing "Chi mai fra gli inni e i plausi" (Our songs his glory praising). In the midst of this, though, Amneris expresses her continued doubt that Radames loves her and speculates if Aida also loves him in "Ah! vieni amor." In an effort to distract herself from his line of thought, she entertains herself with a Dance of the Moorish Slaves while she and the chorus sing "Vieni: sul crin ti piovano" (Come bind your flowing tresses). Torch Dance is intended to be a violent, primitive work, obsessed by its own asymmetry and impulsive by nature. Uniquely colorful musical effects are obtained through the scoring of less common band instruments including an array of special percussion, acoustic/ electric piano and electric bass.Concert Band

As such, while some suggested stickings are given, much of the decisions regarding, 1. what sticking (rudimental or otherwise) to use, 2. the choice of open rudimental rolls or closed concert rolls, and 3. the appropriate tempos, are left to the judgement and stylistic interpretation of the player or teacher. No matter how you choose to interpret these solos, it is hoped that you will find them enjoyable to play and will further your snare drum playing skills.Snare Drum

780072916CD6-ABA6-4C25-BF39-E60902990050S739March of the ToysVictor Herbert (1859-1924) was a German composer who emigrated to the United States where he became a well-known composer of light music and operettas and, along with John Philip Sousa, was one of the founders of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). One of the many "hits" from Victor Herbert's operettas which are still well-known today is the "March of the Toys" from 1903's "Babes in Toyland". In this charming work, Herbert's gift for melody meets with his experience as a military band conductor to inspire a delightful concert work which effectively blend the "march miniature" style utilized by Tchaikovsky and others with the "grand march" style heard in the operas of Verdi and Wagner. Herbert Clarke's masterful setting for the Sousa Band allows audiences to experience a work which is a perennial holiday classic, in an arrangement which brings band performers in touch with some of the greatest names from the golden age of the American concert band. R. Mark Rogers edition of the "March of the Toys", the first to present Herbert L. Clarke's arrangement in full score with complete instrumentation, gives modern conductors and educators the means to secure the place of this item in the repertory for generations to come.Concert Band
