This SERENADE FOR STRINGS is one of three written by Volkmann, all three of which were among his most popular works and which were often performed up until World War I, when he and his music began to disappear, like the music of other fine Romantic era composers. | String Orchestra (8-8-5-5-5)

| 7867 | 736E42FA-3EF4-44BB-AE7C-45D42B3E75BF | A139302 | La Mer (1909 version) | LA MER was the second of Claude Debussy’s (1862-1918) three orchestral works in three sections. Although the composition of LA MER took him more than a year and a half, this was unusually quick progress by his standards. LA MER was premiered in Paris in October 1905 and was initially not well received. However, the work was performed in the US in 1907 and in Britain in 1908, and after its second performance in Paris, in 1908, it quickly became one of Debussy’s most admired and frequently performed orchestral works. This edition by Clinton F. Nieweg, Nancy M. Bradburd, and Lawrence N. Halverson is based on the second published Durand edition of 1909, which included the composer’s revisions. | 7872 | 7378F1E0-B4F2-4E0A-9150-CC4975425775 | A128502 | Concerto for Violin in D, Op. 61 | Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) composed the Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. The premiere by violinist Franz Clement on December 23rd, 1806, at the Theater an der Wien was poorly received, and the work remained obscure until 12-year-old violinist Joseph Joachim revived the work in 1844, long after Beethoven's death, at a performance by the London Philharmonic Society under Felix Mendelssohn. It is now one of the major contributions to the violin repertoire and is regularly performed today. The solo violin parts has been edited and provided with the cadenza by Carl Flesch. | 7876 | 738B0825-6B55-45AE-A2C7-F69449DBDFC5 | A706202 | Symphony No. 91 in E-flat (Hob. I:91; critical ed.) | Count d'Ogny commissioned Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) to write three symphonies for the Concert de la Loge Olympique, which was then recognized as one of the finest orchestras in Europe. He completed the second of these, the SYMPHONY No. 91 in E flat major, Hob. I/91, in 1788. It received its premiere the next year in the Tuileries Palace gardens, mere months before King Louis XVI and his royal family came to live there under custody of the French Revolution. It is his last symphony to exclude trumpets and timpani, but stuffed with delicacies that would have appealed to its Parisian audience. Its graceful, ebullient character offers no hints of the hard misfortune that would soon fall on the aristocratic listeners who first enjoyed this charming work. Instrumentation: 1.2.0.2: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-2+2Vc Obligato-3 in set). Reprint of this critical edition by H.C. Robbins Landon. | 1.2.0.2: 2.0.0.0: Str (4-4-3-2+2Vc Obligato-3 in set) | |

Not only does each section get its thematic moment, but the orchestra also imitates the sounds of traditional Asian instruments. All parts remain in first position, with several tempo and mood changes, from lyric and ethereal to a driving contrapuntal ending. Thorough editorial notes give the history of each song, performance suggestions, and background on the arranger. | String Orchestra

| 7880 | 73A15BC7-74E5-4C78-B4C4-4727FEFB65E2 | 60710009 | Bruyeres, No. 5 from Preludes, Book 2 | Unlike Bach and Chopin, Claude Debussy (1862-1918) wrote his twenty-four PRÉLUDES for solo piano without a clearly organized pattern of key relationships. They were written from December 1909 to April 1913, in two sets, with twelve preludes to each volume. Jane Mortier delivered the premiere of the first volume on May 3, 1911, at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Walter Morse Rummel gave the first complete performance of the second volume on June 12, 1913, at the Aeolian Hall in London. PRELUDE No. 5 from Book 2, subtitled BRUYÈRES, bears similarity to another of his works for piano, LA FILLE AUX CHEVEU DE LIN (THE GIRL WITH THE FLAXEN HAIR). The pianist Marguerite Long, a friend of the composer, suggested that it sounded reminiscent of the mingling scent of sea mist and pines. French composer and arranger Lucien Garban completed this transcription of No. 5 from Book 2 (BRUYÈRES) for violin and piano in 1926. Reprint edition. | Violin and Piano |
